LOL, saw that pic and thought "I know that bloke!".

    /waves at Steve.

I know the Lincoln course well, lived there for many years. Was Michaelgate slippy?

    hah,

    /me waves back..

It stayed dry most the day and then as we were packing the car it started to rain a bit so the riders left on the course must have got it a bit.

The climb was not too bad. just the cobbles made it quite hard to find a rhythm - also hard when you have riders all over the place.. Good fun though.

That was an awesome day. Got black flagged on lap eight after getting blown out the back on lap 3. Chased like a beast only to be picked up by a huge group of riders.

Thanks for all the shouts of Dooooobz while going up the climb.. Loved it..

They did well to pick you out in your stealth kit

What a great day! Still in Lincoln and travelling home today.

We arrived on Friday, Rapha Condor were staying at the same hotel. Kristian Haus was there ahead of the team and came out for a bit of a ridey pidey with me on saturday morning for a short while. What a thoroughly nice bloke but after about 10 miles he knew he was a broken man at the hands of the Peril (...well that's what I'd like to think) Pro's like him are what make this sport so great for punters like me.

The IOM team arrived Saturday nigh in good spirits. The team plan went to the script and the boys supporting Little Pete in the race turned themselves inside out for as long as they could. The IOM kit is Rock Racing which seems quite appropriate.

During the race we positioned ourselves on Michaelgate and the atmosphere was brilliant. Gave Doobz a few shouts as he came past and he even had time for a thumbs up...which means he wasn't trying hard enough  joking aside good effort Doobz that climb at that pace must be an absolute f*cker.

The IOM lads hung on well, I think Tom Balck must have been black flagged about the same time as Doobz and Chris Whorral shorly after. The evergreen Andrew Roche, after a good "job of work" for Little Pete came in about 30th which isn't bad for an old Vet!

If you haven't been to this race go next year it is a great day out.

What's happened to little Pete's brother these days? I thought he was supposed to be the next big thing. Also, how old is Andy Roche now? I'm sure he was racing when I was in the IoM in 1990!

There's another fella who could make it into the Commonwealth team if he keeps working hard, got a few results to his name - Mark somebody, probably not Commonwealth level yet though.

Tim Kennaugh has a thyroid problem, proved very tricky to sort out once and for all with treatment. Think he might have decided to give up on cycling career - went to Oz in Jan with Rapha Condor JLT as back room staff.

You're thinking Mark Christian, right? on the An Post-Sean Kelly team. Joe Kelly's also supposed to be a great prospect - Cav recommended him for the GB Academy

There do seem to be little pockets of the country that churn out really good riders - IOM, Mid Devon through MDCC and the Yorkshire area. Is it the riding, the club mentality there or what?

Doobz I'm guessing you're Dillon Bryne rather than Stephen Smith?

It could be Cyclevox productions, they did the highlights of the Tour of The Reservoir. Ant McCrossan and Dan Lloyd did commentary.

Mroli, or the history of the area? eg like in Northern France with the mining towns.

Wales too, especially in the younger riders coming through. I think it is possibly due to terrain both in that it provides good training but also that the rural nature encourages cycling. I'm surprised we don't see more top riders from Cumbria though, possibly too hard to find races at amateur / youth level without having to travel?

round these parts, which must have some impact on the volume of riders coming through at junior and senior level, meaning a bigger talent pool.

I guess the same applies in IOM, plenty of opportunities at youth level increases the talent pool in later years.
  • It was a cracking race as usual. Just a shame that Russ Downing wasn't there, it would have been a good fight between him and Kennaugh. The gap between Kennaugh and Bialobloki at the finish was similar to Downing and Bialoblocki last year.

That's correct I believe he was given permission to ride for the Island team, in a similar way that Little Pete was although Sky weren't riding in the race.

hmm i didn't think you could ride for your national team if your trade team were also in the race, it was part of the reason we didn't set up a Guernsey National team. Will look into it again, would be good for us to enter some races and Tobyn who was 5th at Lincoln and James who won points jersey and last stage of Essor Breton would be able to ride with us

    "My Rant"
I've just spent a couple of hours saying "FFS show us the race" about idiot motorbike cameramen and their stupid Directors. My wife keeps telling me that they can't hear me and they have to do it for the advertisements.
As you see in this picture it's a narrow road and with a bit of luck that cameraman is showing a view like the photographer has caught here, but probably not.
More usual for these idiots is to focus on a Head or just one rider. (like they do at Football/Cricket or News Studio's and Quiz Shows.
This "Still" photo has caught more detail about that race than most of today's mobile camerawork.

What do I want, well that's easy, I want the TV camera to follow (except in this case) a rider or breakaway group so that I can see the body language of riders and the road the are riding over.
I'm not interested in how clever the bum with the camera is with side shots from ground level or the "Head/Helmet", Front wheel and tarmac shots that are quickly changed as soon as possible (because of a bend) to the other side of the head etc.
The side shot of a rider we think is riding solo but then find he is leading the break or the Peloton but the picture could be the guy is on a Turbo with a picture of countryside going by.
The great shots are when coming down the mountain or passing through a narrow village because the motorbike cannot get his side shots.

The General Public say cycle racing is boring and even on this forum they say a certain stage is boring and TT's are boring but if the Dam camera just followed the riders with only an occasional look at the suffering then cycle racing would be more interesting for everyone.

    Hi deejay,

Firstly, I take offence to 'idiot motorbike cameramen' remark. The 'bum with the camera' is acceptable :D Its a pretty hard job, takes a lot of work to get right, and isn't exactly the safest and most comfortable of all jobs. Being on the back of a motorbike with a 10+ lb camera on your shoulder for hours on end in sometimes very challenging conditions isn't exactly a walk in the park.

I assume your frustration over the last couple of hours is towards the coverage of the Giro? I don't know first hand, but I assume your wife is quite right and they probably have to fill advertising requirements, as well as covering the race. If you have a watch of the Tour of the Reservoir ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7-4v4o0Ki8 ), I think it has a healthy mix of following the action, showing any breakaways from the peloton and keeping it interesting.

In terms of the side on shots, sometimes we simply don't have a choice, as we cant to be too close infront because of drafting and getting in the way.

I understand your frustrations about just wanting to see the action more, I feel the same when watching the F1 sometimes (endless slow-mo closeups of wheels going over apex's wind me up to no end). I think that when you get a cameraman who doesn't follow or perhaps understand the mechanics of the bike races, you get poor coverage.

You are entitled to your opinion, but dont tar us all with the same brush.

My opinion is for the good of the sport and if the cap fits then wear it. (It probably fits because of your indignation)
We get commentators telling us how good you all are and I'm here to tell you how you waste your efforts.
Just bloody well follow the riders that's all I ask because the interesting shots all come from the back.
Even the back of the peloton camera shows more of the terrain the riders have to negotiate and therefore is more interesting with what that cycle race is all about.

Maybe because I have sat in a bunch or breakaway, or clubrun that I feel so strong about the wasted TV coverage when these guys could make the racing more interesting by seeing the road ahead and how far the riders are in front or behind.
With all the effort of hours holding a heavy camera I wonder why they bother and just stay in the studio for the same results.

I remember 20 odd years ago standing on a hill above Trois Pont in the Liege Bastogne race and thinking a TV camera could get a really excellent action shot here but the mobile cameras having to follow the peloton missed it.
However a photographer on a bike saw the view and tapped his driver to stop as he came back to record the scene.

His name of course is Graham Watson and many of the other men did then jump off their bikes because he was there.
I have always wondered why the TV motorbikes don't have a discussion with still photographers about their presentations but no when the road widens you will be back with your chainsets and riders arses.

I wouldn't really use the coverage of the Tour of the Reservoir as a good example. The camera guy missed the race winning move from Evan Oliphant as he was to busy filming a nothing shot of the two Madison riders in the breakaway!
