What wheels for Specialized Hardrock 09 Disc 26

Hello to all! I'm totally new to these forums and seeking an advice. I had both wheels stolen from my Specialized Hardrock 09 Disc 26, so need to buy a replacement. I have not done any upgrades to it, so everything was stock and to he honest I was absolutely happy with it. The wheels it came with were Alex HR or something like this but I couldn't find them on sale anywhere. I have no clue what to buy as an alternative as even though I have been cycling all my life, I'm only a casual cyclist and can't tell £500 rims from £30 ones.
So simply put I need an advice on how to restore my bike to the same standard it was as cheaply as possible.
I use it only for weekend family tours and nothing else.
Please help.
Alex

Did you have 160mm rotors on there? Do you need the cassette too?0
-
These look good for the price...I'm guessing you'll need rotors too?

I don't know what rotors I had there... I guess 160mm are ok for me? Yes I do need a cassette and brake disk and tires. Everything what constitutes two wheels
felix.london, thank you looks promising. I guess they come without brakes or cassettes? Any advice on those?
Advice on tires will be nice to have as well0 -
That set comes with brake disc rotors (they're in the picture). What cassette did you have on there before? Just swap like for like.
Re. tyres - too many to choose from. Where and what do you ride? What were the tyres that were on the wheels that got half-inched?"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Oh, that was silly of me, I thought rotors are axles :oops:What cassette did you have on there before? Just swap like for like.
Do idea... It was 6 or 8 gears if I remember right... Is it safe to just buy the cheapest from Merlin's?Re. tyres - too many to choose from. Where and what do you ride? What were the tyres that were on the wheels that got half-inched?
The tires I had were "off road" Specialized, that's all I know. I ride mostly unpaved roads in the parks or along the rivers. Used to do some off road, but now I usually carry my 3yo son in the topeak seat behind me, so no more of that. I like how off-road tires look and feel though so would like to stick with that.0 -
Will have been 8 or very possibly 9 - count the clicks on the shifter, you have one more gear than clicks!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

You need a cassette that matches your shifters. If it was six you'll have a problem with those wheels - I doubt it was.I don't do smileys.

Can be used with a 7speed cassette and spacer anyway, or an 8 speed cassette with one gear indexed out.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I counted clicks on the shifter, it's 7 speed all right. Thank you all for great advice.
So, I buy this wheel set http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/w ... otors.html
Shimano HG50 7 Speed Cassette 12-28 http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/m ... 12-28.html
Now, about tires and tubes are these any good for the rims advised above and my usage (unpaved roads/very lite offroad)?
Schwalbe Land Cruiser 26 x 1.9/2.0" http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/t ... 19-20.html
Schwalbe SV/AV13 - 26 x 1.5 - 2.5" Tube http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/t ... -tube.html
What about valves? I would certainly prefer Schrader since they are compatible with car pump, but are they compatible with the rims (I'm under an impression that Schrader are bigger in diameter)?0 -
How steep are the hills you climb? a 12-28 cassette misses out some of the easier gears. you could get a 12-32 for example. I'll have to leave others to advise on compatibility if you go down that route though.0
-
Whichever cassette you go for, I should ask Merlin if they will fit it onto your new wheel for you unless you are happy doing this for yourself.0

Because they are different widths. This way negates the need for the spacer and is the sensible solution.0 -

+1, but which rear mech do you have, shimano or sram ?

if shimano

if sram
Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 10- CANYON Nerve AM 6 20110 -
To clarify, the spacing between sprockets is the same on a 7 and an 8 speed (hence the chain being the same), an 8 speed cassette is one gear wider than a 7 speed, so fiting a 7 speed on an 8 speed freehub needs a spacer that is the same width as a gear (sprocket plus gap between sprockets) - 9 and 10 move the sprockets closer together, use different chains and fit on an 8 speed freehub.
If you don't mind used I have a few 8 speed cassettes I'd sell for a few quid (delivered).Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
As the OP says he was "absolutely happy" with his bike as it was before the wheels were nicked, and just wants to restore it to the same standard, surely his best bet is just to get a set of wheels delivered with a 7 speed cassette fitted. That way the only job might be reindexing as opposed to swapping shifters and cassettes over. The switch to 8 speed is unnecessary to achieve these goals.0
-
No one is saying to get new shifters though. Using your way just get it delivered with the cassette and index out the biggest cog0
-
So how do I index out a speed? Could not find any clear guide on google ...0
-
When you index the rear, as per standard indexing (see parktools website) you just treat either second gear as first, or 7th as 8th and ignore one end one.......Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
