6 mile walk in road shoes :(

Ouch, managed to avoid long walks so far thankfully. Def go with two tubes and did you snap the valve when pumping the spare up (or removing the pump from it once inflated)? If so it's worth investing in a mini-pump with a flexible hose head (like most of the Lezyne ones for example, which are also screw on) as these are much less likely to damage the valve through clumsy removal. I'd also take some Park tyre boots with you to, they don't take up much room but can fix tyre gashes enough to get you home (although you can also bodge this type of repair with folded up crisp packets etc.)0

I also carry a few small pieces of old tyre that I have cut up for just this purpose. Either way, it is definitely worth practising how to use a tyre boot at home, bloody hard to learn when out on the road and freezing cold0 -
I've seen a couple of LBS near me that have inner tube vending machines outside their shops, so even on a Sunday or in the evening you can get a new tube. Of course it is a long way to walk to Switzerland if you need an extra tube whilst out on a ride.0

Your eyesight's clearly better than mine if you can spot every thorn/splinter on the ground!
It doesn't have to be every one, but considering the situation I think I would take a rather annoying thorn to the foot over ruining very expensive shoes. And the speed you are travelling at will allow you to see patches of them before you actually walk over them, so wouldn't be too hard to avoid. You're not exactly walking through the Black Forest are you?0 -
... worst I've done was a tad over 3 in road shoes... a tad further with MTB (course, one of the shoes was still attached to the pedal... which was no longer attached to the crankarm)...
Course, in the pre cell phone days, I came across a guy who shredded his tubular 20 miles from home and at least 10 miles from the nearest shop that carried a replacement.0
