6 mile walk in road shoes :(

Yesterday was not my day. Got a puncture - big gashes in tube, so not patchable. Tried to replace the tube, but either the Giant spare I had was dodgy or I'm a cackhanded idiot (or both) - the valve came off. I also managed to break a tire lever :? A couple of cyclists kindly stopped to try to help - but nothing to be done with the bust tubes.

6 miles in road shoes is not fun. To make matters worse, it's a lovely day for a ride and I'm still a bit too sore from the walk to get back on the bike :(

On the plus-side, bike seems fine (took me five minutes to replace the tube this morning - if only it was this easy by the road last night) and I managed to get off when the tube blew without doing myself any damage. Found a nice spot for bat watching as I was walking back, too... I might start carrying 2 spare tubes.

2 tubes is definitely the way to go

If you do decide to carry 2 tunes, keep it a secret. I mentioned that I have 2 tubes and all hell broke loose.

Happens to us all. A few weeks back trashed a tyre. Tried to get back home using two spare tubes. The two Conti Supersonics got me maybe another 100 yards. Had the kids to pick up from school in half an hour. Had a new phone with no contacts apart from the Mrs who was in a meeting. Had to swallow my pride and go to a local farmhouse.
Remember to show your Mrs your shoes and tell they are past repair and score for a new pair.

A £20 note and a mobile phone is how I guard against this. I hope a taxi would be prepared to put my bike in the boot though or my plan would come to naught.

Would I regret it if I asked why? :)

I actually had been considering new shoes - mine are getting very tatty! I wonder how the cleats will have held up to the walk, though - would be a pain to need to replace those.

There was me thinking i was the only one! Happened to me early Jan and had to walk roughly 6 miles ruined my cleats and bont shoes so I sympathise. Put it down to experience and try not to let it happen again!

Get yourself a pair of cleat covers! They're not expensive and will save you buying a new pair of cleats (and possibly shoes) if you get stuck walking miles like you had to do. I've walked 2-3 miles on a pair of covers before and they're still almost as good as new, well worth the money.

Why would there be any argument about it? Any sort of cleat is going to suffer from being walked on for 6 miles! Some might cope better than others but it's not like there is any real disadvantage to carrying a set of covers just in case...

Wait are we not "allowed" to carry 2 spare inner tubes now? because I've used 2 in a ride before.

I would have made a phone call rather take the long walk :D

Walking into the shop in SPD's is bad enough but 6 miles must be hell on earth.

I had considered it, but by the time I'd tried to remember who I knew had a van/bike rack, found someone sober on a Friday evening, and they'd driven across town I could almost have been home. Do taxis take bikes? I thought they didn't.

The first few miles were OK, but it did start to drag after that... Surprised no-one took the piss given that I was walking through town, in tights and ridiculous shoes, on a Friday evening
  • Taxis here in Cambridge regularly take bikes, but you must request a van when you call, or someone who has mentioned they are bike friendly. Had to do this on many occasions also due to lights dying on me.

This is true but he keeps phoning asking for sex favours and I'v told him 20 pound isnt enough.

Also - it pays to note any phone boxes and the like- you can do the REVERSE thing - 2 tubes is the way to go.

2 tubes, a small packet of sticky patches (because you never know) and MTB shoes (oh, also £20, a debit card and a mobile phone).

Bad luck there though chap, despite all plans anyone can come a cropper. I crashed on Dartmoor in the summer and gladly took the offer by a kind passer by of a lift to the A&E whilst another kind local stored my bike. Not sure what I would have done without them as I wasn't really compus mentos (not sure if that is a flavour of mint, btw).

    Did the walk last year.

Took my shoes off as I didn't want to ruin them. Then took my socks off as hey were good rapha ones and didn't want to ruin them. Walking was ok but when I got back I noticed burning on my soles of my feet. Huge blisters that hurt for days. I was limping round the office all week

The kids we coach are all told to take two tubes with them on all rides.

Happens to us all every now and then, this week I had a puncture on the commute, rain pissing down and cold but I managed to stop change the tube put enough air to get me the 5 miles to the station, back on the bike and flump the rear goes again  2nd tube in no more than a few yards and it happens again

I also carry patches but the rain was so heavy there's no way these would have stuck, it was 11 miles uphill home or 5 to the station, 5 miles it was.

What can you do eh!? to make matters worse I got a puncture on the way home the next day, one on the way out the following day after and finally a slow flat yesterday.

Not the greatest of weeks really.

Having read that old thread about walking 25m in cleats, I'm glad I've got SPDs - you wouldn't go hiking with them in, and I am sore today, but they weren't that awful for walking in. If I can get out tomorrow, I'll find out then if they've survived the walk!

I often wonder why the makers of cleat covers don't put a little bit of a heel on them, seems such an obvious thought.

what and ruin a pair of top of the range imported hand spun silk ultra lightweight velismo carbon reinforced bamboo fabric with silver antibacterial thread cycling socks!!
  • Notnot, you are obviously going to be able to walk around them, it's not like you are walking at 30mph.

And the socks are much cheaper than some shoes, I wouldn't worry about it as much. Or just walk barefoot?

15m spin this evening. Cleats, shoes and bike all seem fine :) I ache a bit, though...
