Yes, but I think the OP has run away from the monster he unwittingly created.

Commuting on my hybrid with my seatpost bag and courier bag and my glasses tucked inside my helmet straps I think I am probably so far outside the rules that I will be shunned by the general cycling community anyway.

Any for those fans of my use of the word willy, have a fanny on me. ;)

well some of us tried to keep it o the topic. Thanks for starting the thread as it's given me food for thought during my daily struggles against gravity. As with most people dropping 10kg of gut is going to do more for my speed up hills than technique or gearing. Now where's that Silly thread about weight loss...
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Not backpedalling at all. In fact I forgot about exactly what it was I was answering until I just revisited the OP.

As a result I am more assured than ever that my answer was perfectly acceptable!

To be fair, it's not an entirely unreasonable assumption to make that the OPs question was exclusively related to gym based solutions in which case your response is logical though it is equally logical to assume it wasn't. But on the other hand, squats are still a pretty ineffective solution and even if the OP doesn't want to do repeats, his climbing will benefit far more simply by attacking the hills he does climb much more aggressively than any from amount of squats.

You'd have helped your cause somewhat simply by quoting the part of the question you were responding to.

I'm afraid that doesn't count as "hilly". 700ft in 9 miles fails the test...

It's amazing what vertical scale exaggeration does for making a climb look scary! Mind you, shown in proportion almost any climb looks disappointingly unimpressive!

Hills? If you can try to catch Eurosport's coverage of The Tour Of Turkey today - I caught a bit this morning (boy had left the tv on) and the lead group were holding off a chase group at a reasonable pace, on what looked like a 1 in 8 trip up the side of a mountain. The way to get up it seemed to be to weigh no more than 7 stone, have a half-ar$ed beard thing going on round the fizzog and grit your teeth a lot as you grind up on a 39/25. Easy. Probably.

That was my point earlier in the thread - a 100ft/mile definition of "hilly" would mean (on exactly the type of hill above) that you're climbing 200ft/mile on the "Up" bits. A 14-mile ride means 1400ft of climbing in 7 miles (on a ride like that) - that's beyond "hilly". Personally, I really don't like that "definition"

according to garmin i have 1200 feet of ascent on my home commute of 14 miles. which consits of two hills and the odd bit of up but not hills. Would that be considered hilly?

I did 580 feet in 1.5 miles a couple of weeks ago. Does that count as 'hilly'?

Seriously though. I used to hate climbing hills. Then, about half-way up the one I tend to think of as the 'final kick in the teeth' on my commute home, I found myself asking the following questions:

    1) Does anything actually hurt, or is it just a bit uncomfortable?

    2) Am I in a race?

    3) Does anyone except me care two hoots what gear I'm using?

Once I'd worked out that the answer to all three of those questions was 'no', it kind of took the fear away. And after I'd stopped trying to grind up them in the highest gear I could, and started just spinning up at a (relatively) comfortable pace, I found that I started getting up them quicker! Now they're just part of the ride (like freezing rain and headwinds).
