As I already have a bike for riding in lumpy places, I fancy building a simple XC type of bike just for fast trail work and climbing , something I can just throw in the back of the car and go for a quick blast. It will have wide bars and a light dropper post so it wont be a one trick pony .I just fancy a normal steel framed Ht with a couple of modern twists.I have just purchased a 2nd hand but pretty immaculate Voodoo Wanga steel frame as I have always admired those frames and reckon it will be a good base to start from. I am going to build it up with bits I have lying around along with bits I was going to use to resurrect my Banshee Viento but I am getting rid of that now. I have also just got hold of a Cotic BFE frame and I have enough bits to build it into a reasonable play bike, so as soon as it has been for a trip to the powdercoaters (battleship grey not my thing) I will start another thread

After sorting through my parts bin, this will be the final spec. It will be a mix of new and lightly used parts.

It will look nice do like the classic look of Voodoo H/T frames.

Think you will struggle to get 25 pounds with that build though, I have an On one Inbred single speed with carbon post and forks and it is 24.5 pounds without pedals. Mind it wasnt built as a weight weenie it was a bits in the shed build.

Voodoo frame is a pound lighter than the Inbred so it will be close, I'm looking forward to this build, ages since I rode anything with a measly 100mm at the front.

Its good fun to ride a short travel HT you forget how crisp and precise they feel compared to a bouncer. Mine is currently a rigid with a 38/14 singlespeed setup but when summer arrives it might get the Rebas put back on and a smaller chainring for fun and panting in the Hills.

I'm considering some long flat bars and bar ends.

Bikes now built, just need to finish off the gear cables then I can get some pictures done. Turned out nicer than I thought it would, although the frame was a pound heavier than claimed, taking the complete weight to 26.5Lbs with pedals. Hopefully we will have a nice weekend so I can take it to some hills.

26.5 is still bloody good with a steel frame. :D

I do have some Haven carbon bars, lighter stem and much lighter seatpost which would get it into the 25's. I will see if the wide bars and dropper post are needed on this bike as I reckon they could encourage me to ride it much harder than the 100mm forks will allow and the idea of this bike is more fast XC.

Here she is all finished. As I mention above I may change a couple of bits, but a quick blast down the street and after tackling a well big kerb I can report that the bike has put a big grin on my face. It just felt right as soon as I got on, feels very agile and rides lighter than the scales suggest. Thinking about it I think I will keep the dropper post and wide bars in place as it all feels right. I did try a stem with a lesser rise but it felt too low so the combo of hi rise stem and low rise bars put the controls just where I want them.

How is the Gravity Dropper? I am toying with the idea of putting on on the 8500, but I am not keen on the weight penalty.

Gravity droppers are great and the 27.2mm post weighs in at 365 grams which is very light for a dropper. Very simple design that can be easily maintained and all spares are cheaply priced and new parts can be purchased to either increase or decrease the drop, and the knob unit can be upgraded to a remote. More sophisticated posts can stop at any height but the gravity dropper is either up or down with the option of a midway stop if needed.

I've found an On-One cnc 70mm 6% rise stem which drops the front slightly but still feels good so on it goes, its a bit lighter too and if I'm honest I was not too keen on the looks of the hope stem on this bike. Also removed the outer chainring as I wont use it off road, and replaced it with a nice cnc'd sillver bash ring. Thats the tinkering done with now, really dont want to touch anything on this bike now as it feels lovely and I'm happy with the looks. I thought 740mm bars would be overkill but they feel great, I think that once you have used wide bars it is hard to go back to narrow ones.

Although I mention above that I am finished with the bike, I was in fact lying through my teeth
The Recons although decent forks , they're a few years old (albeit as new) and a bit dated with features such as I.S brake mounts and the older style lower leg casting so a pair of white (and a bit of red) Rockshox Reba SL's are on their way. Also gonna swap the XTR chainset for a Middleburn RS8 X-type Duo 4 bolt , it will come with 42/27 rings but I'm gonna swap for 22/34. I know the XTR set up is awesome but I have a soft spot for Middleburn cranks and I fancy giving the RS8's a go. Finally going to swap the 70mm One-one cnc stem for a Thomson x4 of the same dimensions purely for the reason I reckon the X4 will handle the leverage forces of a 740mm bar better.

Here she is with her new bits fitted. Swapped the Recon fork for a Reba SL, also changed the Hope stem for a Thomson X4. Swapped the XTR chainset for a Middleburn Duo RS8 X-type set up with 26/34 Blackspire Super pro chainrings.

Found the chainset on Ebay, £100 inc Middleburn Duo rings basically brand new so I will put up with the black spider although if it starts to bother me, a red spider will be ordered, had the Blackspire rings beforehand. Biggest bargain off Ebay were the Reba's, £75 posted !!!! pretty much immaculate although I have removed the poplock for a manual compression/lockout knob.

After a long think I have decided to make this bike more of a retro XCish style bike as I seem to be riding it way outside its limits, I actually matched some downhill times that I had previously set on my 160mm travel Canyon Strive. The idea of the Wanga was a bike for general riding and training but the wide bar and dropper post seem to be leading me astray so I am going to make some drastic changes to the bike. First to go are the Rebas, in their place will be a pair of rigid Surly Instigator forks which are chromo, straight and will match the frames 100mm fork geo. Second to go is the Gravity Dropper to be replaced by a titanium seatpost, I will also be swapping the white Charge Knife for a balck Charge SpoonLeather/Ti and the Salsa seat clamp will make way for a Surly Constrictor which will mean no slipping seatpost. Next to go is the Stans Arch EX wheelset which is making way for a pair of Bontrager Racelite TLR's which I have re-built with brass nipples as the alu ones were problematic and holding them in place are a pair of Pz racing bolt on skewers. The XT 203/180mm floating rotors will become a pair of 180/160mm XTR floating centreloc rotors. Tyres will be Bontrager xr2 2.2" and they will be run tubeless. The 740mm Answer riser will make way for a 711mm Easton Haven carbon lo-rise bar and the Hope 70mm 20% rise stem is going back on to lift the front end a bit . To complete the semi retro theme I will be swapping the Sram Rocket gripshifts for a pair of lightweight Sunrace 9spd thumbshifters and the lock on gripshift length grips will be replaced with a pair of silicon grips. The above changes will take a chunk of weight off the bike along with slowing me down on steep stuff whilst helping me climb like a goat on speed. Anyone who owns a Wanga will know the paint chips easier than potatoes so although I love the colour ,I may treat the frame to a nice tough powdercoat.

Nice, very different to my Wanger. Had to service mine yesterday as I'm taking it to Dalby next week
