Exertion Headache

I was out on a training ride yesterday and had just reached the top of a short climb when BOOM! - all of a sudden I had the most excruciating pulsating pain inside the lower back of my skull. It was bad enough that I had to pull over and tear off my helmet to clutch my head. It subsided after a couple of minutes but there was a dull pain for the rest of my ride. I had a couple of ibuprofen when I got in, which helped, but I was woken during the night with another headache, which I took a couple more pills for. I still have a dull ache now.

A bit of 'Googleing' this morning suggests this could have been an exertion headache. Has anyone else experienced this? Are they a recurring problem? or a one off?

Keep an eye on it - if it happens again go and see a doctor. Better safe than sorry.
  • That will be a dehydration headache, I used to get them out in the mountains regularly when I started riding. I made a conscious effort to be hydrated well before a ride, and this helped a lot. Be sure to drink enough fluids. Once you learn hydration methods and have those squared away you won't have those come back.

Goodness- Sudden excruciating head pain? - don't want to be over dramatic but I would have got that checked out immediately by a medical professional - just a chance it was a tiny stroke! Hope its just dehydration - it can cause headaches but not usually like you describe.
