Garmin ANT+ will do the job.

The Edge 500 and 800 don't work with an ANT+ stick.

If it's just for TrainerRoad then you need any ANT+ stick - the Garmin one or the much smaller Suunto Movestick.

As above, it's not the 800/500 that you pair, it's the speed/cadence GSC10 that is paired I believe (just check yourself)

I'd recommend the Suunto Movestick Mini: it's very small and you can just leave it plugged in to a laptop without fear of breaking it . I've used it successfully with PeriPedal and GoldenCheetah, and I'm sure it works fine with TrainerRoad. Pairs with Garmin, Motorola and BTwin sensors (HR & Speed/Cadence) also works with PeriPedal's feature that transmits derived power to my Garmin 500, so the Garmin thinks I've got a power meter.

+1. I'm sure I would have broken a Garmin Ant stick by now carrying the laptop around as much as I do, the Suunto is tiny and does the job really well, thoroughly recommended.
