Living Below the Line

Hello,

My partner has asked if I would fancy taking part in "Live Below the Line", which is "an innovative awareness and fundraising campaign that's making a huge difference in the fight against extreme poverty".

https://www.livebelowtheline.com/uk-en-thecause

Basically, my week's food would come to no more than £5.

Has anyone taken part in this? Do you think I would be okay putting the miles on the bike on only £5 worth of food for the week? Any advice?

Cheers
Ben

If you're living in poverty, I doubt you'd be able to afford an expensive road bike.

Let's hypothesise that I have the expensive road bike before poverty hits. And that my Gumtree advert falls on deaf ears. Now return to my first post. :)

    Easy.....

Porridge oats 500g 65p, that's enough for 10 days, make it up with water.

Pasta and passata for lunch and dinner, £2 for a kg of whole wheat penne and 50p for a carton of passata, that's enough for a week.

Total £3.15p, with the remaining you could add some milk for the porridge or cheese for the pasta to add some fat in.

Not pretty or exciting, but it's doable without starving.

That actually sounds quite nice! Thank you.

Tesco value rice is 40p/kg - there are all sorts of things you can do with that

might want some protein in there too, soya beans (a complete protein) about 40% protein, (33% in chicken) sure they must also be going cheap at your tesco :D

    Asda and Aldi are 75p/kilo.

Sainsbury tin of Rice pudding 350calories for 13p. Tastes great and made with whey protein.

Sorry for the question but I'm not sure I understand this. The challenge is to live your life as you would otherwise for 5 days spending only £1 per day? Is this limit just for just food or everything? If it's just food, depending on how much you ride, you might be able to do it. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do it without greatly reducing my mileage for that week though.. If it's not just food, what happens if you puncture? :)

No worries. Yes, I would try to live as 'normally' as possible on only £5 worth of food. Just food.

Cous cous is also a decent food that's very cheap.

Cous cous is just small 'grains' of pasta, no different at all to pasta except usually much more expensive.

You don't tend to need much of it for a meal though, hence why it works out pretty cheap. I can probably get a good 20 meals out of a 500g bag. For 69p that's pretty good imo.
