Has anyone got a preference on these ie which one to buy to help me through longer rides (im not interested in people who dont think there any good i would rather be lead towards which one is more suitable to fuel me through longer harder rides) thanks

The 4:1 is supposed to be better for long rides because after a few hours the protein is meant to help you to process the carbohydrate better.
  • Both :)
I sometimes take a bottle of 4:1 for use towards the end of a longer ride.
If It doesn't get drunk then I use it as a recovery drink.

I use myprotein homebrew drinks. Surely maltodextrin is just maltodextrin, fructose is just fructose and protein is just protein? It's about 70% cheaper though.

Quite so. And you can do it to whatever flavour you want.

I find 4:1 easier on the stomach on long(er) rides, but other than that, I'd say the operational differences between the two are negligable, I use 4:1 in 50's, 100's and 12hr's never had a problem with it.

Being lazy here, but what proportions would you use to make your drinks?

4:1 maltodextrin/protein. I'll tend only to bother with it on rides of 70+ miles. I've had some rubbish legs lately in the cold, but the two longer rides when I've put this in my bottle my legs have kept up with me. (That's an unscientific personal anecdote, by the way.)

Sometimes I just have water (up to 1 hour)
    Sometimes 100% Maltodextrin (longer rides)
Sometimes 80% Maltodextrin and 20% Fructose (longer rides)
Sometimes 60% Maltodextrin and 20% Fructose and 20 Protein.(longer rides)

I used 2:1 last year as it was the provided drink for the iron-distance tri I did. I tended to mix it following the instructions, but using 750ml of water rather than 500ml.
