sore ankles/tendons

Hoping that someone has had some experience with this.....

Since just before christmas an increasingly sharp pain has been developing on my right achilles tendon that is aggivated by cycling (although not every ride) this then takes a day or 2 to calm down. Moving my foot around to either lengthen or shorten the tendon does not relieve or reduce the pain.

Following on from some training this weekend the same has now begun to happen in my left ankle also.

I have been riding bikes forever and i havnt changed my position on the bike at all recently nor have i started training any harder than i have in the last 18 months.

Anybody have any suggestions on what might be causing this? Im sure I will just have to rest them and wait for the inflammation to go completely after a few weeks. I just dont want to take 3/4 weeks off the bike to completetly rest it only for it to flair up again if i'm doing something wrong.

Thanks

I know you say you haven't been training harder but have you been doing more mileage?

Both my Achilles tendons got sore on the last couple of days of LEJoG. Made a sort of grating sound as I pointed my toes up and down. Couple of weeks of no cycling sorted it.

    Sorry - double post
  • Tightness of back side of legs - or simillar caused by clothing restriction? Don't let it go untreated - see a physio - tendons are notorious -second only to ligaments for taking along time to heal

Sorry mate, those kind of injuries are so frustrating. If you've struggled with this for quite a while and have tried lowering or hiring your seat. - moving cleats back and forth or side to side without any improvement. Perhaps you need to get a professional bike fit. These guys sorted me out http://www.thebikewhisperer.co.uk/
Alternatively go on Steve Hoggs website http://www.stevehoggbikefitting.com/articles/ for free guidance. Good luck
  • Last year I had six weeks out during the summer due to an achilles swelling on my right ankle. It started during the winter and got worse until one day in the spring I had to get a lift home.

It turned out to be my winter boots. They had a ridge which was just at the right place to put pressure on my Achilles sheath. It took me months to work out what the problem was.

All I'm saying is, it might not be anything more that footwear or new or tight overshoes.

I hope it is that simple.
