To be honest I cannot understand why people would want to go anyway. Who wants to see the Tour flash past on fast roads for a few seconds, preceded and followed by noisy, dangerous and polluting cars. Then missing the start and finish in some cases due to not being able to get to a tv.Contador is the Greatest0

Agreed. I wouldn't make the effort to go and watch unless it was either time trial or team time trial. It's over in a flash and you're left wondering what all the fuss was about. Not so bad on mountain stages, but then the effort to get there is even more!0

Don't knock it until you've tried it.Ben

Me too. That's what I was getting at - the effort of getting there is both worth it and part of the experience.Ben

Oops, my bad. I thought you meant the flat stages in this country. :oops:0 -
I've been to several different stages around France, albeit not hardcore mountain stages (which I am not knocking at all). I refer more to the flatter and fast ones. Always a let down and no fun. Being at the start or finish can be ok though.Contador is the Greatest0

Come on - you're just not going to miss the opportunity to see the TdF on your own terra-firma. Flash or no flash. You're going to want to take it all in.0

Did that in 2007!
To be honest, if you live near to the route, I can understand going. But otherwise, I'd rather go to France. I like the travelling, going somewhere different, that's part of it for me.
And I've posted this a few times now, recorded this on a flat stage in 2010. Love the helicopters, radio chatter and then the woosh as the riders come past. It's all good!

(oh and I did make it back to the hotel to see the finish on TV...)0 -
The primary reason for bringing the tour to Yorkshire is to boost tourism - many people will travel up for a weekend/ week away with visits to attractions and then the advantage of seeing the tour pass by [along with all the promotional razz] as well.0

"Mountains" is a bit optimistic...

You should try the football world cup! In SA they charged 3x the summer rate and fifa contracted 95% of the rooms - enforcing a min 3 night stay and 20% surcharge.
It'll be the same in Brazil, unfortunately I doubt they'll learn from the lower than expected fan numbers in 2010.
On a slightly related note, how do we all think the police will deal with peole painting roads in Yorkshire?0 -

I get to see the world's biggest bike race on roads I used to ride on as a "wee lad", that's something I can't do through the TV.
The stage into Sheffield finishes outside where my Dad works.0 -
Luckily my parents live on the route in the Dales so I'm sorted, but my Mum has joked about renting the garden out for tents (and charging me for B&B)!
The hotels in Bruges demand 2/3 night stay on the weekend of Flanders so it's not uncommon - would you rather they just charged 500 for 1 night - also a good chunk of the rooms will be block booked by the Tour Organisers so those that still have space can charge what they want.0
