Knee pain

Not sure what to do about this knee problem... getting sharp pain in the right side of my right knee when I walk & pedal.

Have tried stretching, have tried doing only low intensity riding, have tried a few weeks off the bike, to no avail.

Cleats are set up properly (have had a bike fit at Cadence) & I have custom insoles for arch support.

My doctor is sh*t, doesn't care about any cycling-related pains I have, he just prescribes drugs and says stop cycling.

Obvious answer is see a private doctor but before I go down that rather expensive route, anybody else had this problem and can you suggest anything?

Is it bone or muscle? Could either be ham string problems or a muscle imbalance.
  • i have arthritis of both knees and so knee pain discussion always interests me. \

if my knee is hurting after a ride i fit my knee brace that gives me support when im walking around and smother it in deep heat type gel. i never bother with ibuprofen pills as they dont work and im not to keen on the idea of taking tablets all the time.

the last thing you want to do however is aggrivate your problem as you will only do more damage. maybe it is best to do what i did which was to literally tell your doctor you want physio and wether they could arange that for you. you'll have to go to pre physio scans etc and they will find the root of the problem.

  • Yes - go to a good physio first. One who specialises in sports stuff would be even better. Could ITB syndrome, cartelage or muscle imbalance. Or cleats wrong (despite fitting, or too tight cleats (not enough float for knee) but don't make it worse. Get a diagnosis - even if i costs....

I was referred to sports physio when I had private medical with my last job.

They taped my knees like in this video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwMzw5mDN0E

It seemed to do the trick. No knee pain now for over 7 years.

Does the pain come on around the top of the fibula head? (its the hard lump just below and outside of your knee) If so i had same thing...ITB syndrome, bursitis. Its a hard hard hard thing to get rid of if this is what your getting. Lower your saddle...and spin lighter gears. So many people are obsessed with saddles that you could touch clouds with. Not saying its your problem but if it is ITB problems then best to lower your saddle a bit and protect the over stretch on the band.

Get to a good cyclist physio. Or any good known physio. With constant physio my knee did recover - 3months. But due to my left leg over compensating it now has the same problem. Time is your only friend and rest/light cycling.
  • I have been suffering from a simalar pain but on the left side of my left knee, just where my quad joins my knee.
I had put it down to my cleat being worn, funnily enough my left foot is the one i frequently pull out and the cleat had worn at an angle. New cleat, and no problems so far.

Unfortunately there are a loads of things that may cause it, just sharing my experience and hopefully it will be something as simple as this for you rather than a few weeks off the bike.

    Best of luck!

Private doctor? Don't you mean physio? You could ask your GP to refer you to a physio, but then that would be with the NHS where they don't conduct proper assessments due to needing to see an X amount of people in an X amount of time.

Go private, or join a physiotherapy forum where you are more likely to get a definitive answer. But I will ask.. does the pain only occur during the stance phase, that is, when your balancing foot is in contact with the surface?

It's weird - the pain has been there for months, it got worse in the last month or two and has now almost completely disappeared. I'm pretty sure it only hurt when my foot was on the ground, with my weight on it. Why?
