Improving Speed?

Before I used to go out and do long rides for the mileage, I now know that's not the best idea it can only help you gain endurance, I have a training plan of doing hill repeats once a week adding an extra repeat each week, I need some more suggestions, how often should I do long rides once a week and should they be with a group or on your own? I commute to work and would like to use that time for training if possible.

If you give people a bit more background as to the reasons (goals) for wanting to be quicker.
Where you have this training plan from - a reliable source or self made up?
Group rides are excellent because there is ALWAYS someone harder than you... so you try to keep with them.
Commutes imo are for getting to work safely above everything else.

I only ask this because most of your posts are about wanting to go quicker ..

No hill repeats, no intervals, no turbo sessions you don't even need to ride the bike to get this speed improvement..
Just work on your riding position. Like fit some aero bars. These are instant speed enhancers even on you old hack bike.
Your commute to work is how many miles ? flat or hilly?

If you want to be a strong rider you have to do strong things.
However if you train like a cart horse you'll race like one.
