Di2 software updates - multishift

Hi folks,

After reading about the firmware upgrades to Di2 (Ultegra and I think also 11 speed DA) to allow multiple shifts (hold down shift button and RD keeps changing gears) I decided to phone around and see where I could get this upgrade done - couldn't find any LBS who had any idea what I was talking about :o) In Glasgow I spoke to Dales Cycles who said that they have the kit on order and will be able to offer the service for £25 in a few weeks.

I decided to bite the bullet and get the PC interface and do it myself (afterall I built the bike myself, it would be good to be able to maintain the electronic shifting too). So if anyone wants any Di2 tweaks, firmware updates etc. and are reasonable local to West Lothian let me know via PM and we can sort something out.

The speed at which it shifts can be tweaked, so can button order, left / right lever function (i.e. swap RD / FD shifting so that left lever controls RD etc.). It also has diagnostic features to help determine faults.

Cheers,
FJJ

Oh crikey! It's come to this! It will be a cold day in hell before a PC interfaces with any of my bikes

  • TBH I'm surprised Di2 hasn't got multishift as std; but I suppose it means people would be more likely to buy the £150 interface box.

In wanting to get some use out of old 10 speed Shimano wheels (or other wheels where 11 speed freewheels are not an option) it'd be handy if 11 speed DA could be programmed to index 10 speed.

I did read somewhere that Ultegra 10 speed *should* be re-programmable to 11 speed as it's just indexing that needs altered. Time will tell I suppose...

You do need to make sure that your derailleurs anti-virus is up to date :-)
  • Got mine updated last week by Sigma, no way would I ever try it myself as even fixing a puncture is stretching my mechanical capabilities.
  • I expect someone will hack the protocol (read it might be based on GM's CAN bus? ) if Shimano don't give the options, and before too long you'll get software that'll let you do just about anything with it.

    A bit like this...

Don't! How long before wireless self contained GPS and shifter systems are getting downloaded on the fly by crooks in the car behind you who then don't even need to follow you home because they've got all the info about where the bike has been for the last 6 months?!

That's a great offer, and were I nearer I'd sort something out with you.

I'm in Leeds and I did the same ring round the LBS' the other week. To their credit they knew what i was talking about, and some were keen to get hold of the kit (Woodrups/Chevin), but didn't have it yet.

I've no plans yet to buy the kit for what would probably be a once only use, so am forced to wait for the LBS' to get on trend and buy the kit

However, if anyone anywhere in the North of England does have the kit, I'd be happy to make a contribution if you'd let me bring the bike over :D

I use a Bryton GPS - my computer interfaces with my Bryton - not the bike. That's an important distinction!

You could go Campag as it already has multi shift and auto-trimming
  • Is there any need for them to charge for this sort of thing? Seems a good way to annoy loyal customers.

Are you guys serious about the shifters being controlled ?

    Sort of.

With the Di2 shifters Shimano have built a diagnostics application with a connection kit for the shifters. This allows the (properly equipped) mechanic to "get inside" the brain of the electronics to changes the way they operate. You can tweak the speed of the shift, which buttons do which, you could swap front and rear shift from left to right shifter, and/or set up multi shift (where a click and hold triggers a shift of multiple gears e,g 4 up 3 down, or 5 up 5 down... whatever)

So this is like your mechanic plugging your car into a diagnostic test system in the garage.

This isn't about taking your PC with you on a ride

[edit] All fun, but for home mechanics if you want do do this you need to buy the app and the connection kit at ~£150 iirc. Hence the OP's offer, and my frustration that my local bike shops haven't got them selves properly tooled up yet.

This is something that interests me, If any of you guys are willing to let me tinker, I would love to have a go at speeding up your shifters :)

I have been thinking about this, and we nearly have a auto gear box as such, if you could connect a cadence sensor, speed sensor, and power meter, to the di2, in theory you could make it auto shift to a specific cadences heart rate , or power

    Real men use stick shift.

But I'm packing a 3 cylinder reliant engine, not v8 Aston engine. No amount of fuel additive going to bridge that gap

    :)

Well, if you get the di2 let me know if you want to code the shifters.

    Cube Attain SL Disc
    Giant CRS 2.0
  • Will this work with any version of Di2 as I have the original 10 speed version.

Yep. Mine's ten speed as well and works a treat.

I just push my lever further and it moves 3 sprokets instead of 1, really you would think this Di2 stuff would be sorted out already :-)

The point is: Is 3 what you want? would you prefer 2, or 4, or the whole block? and in just the down shift? or up shift too, and the same for both of different?

it's about the ability to configure , that's all.

marginal gains..... I very much doubt it. Fun playing with gadgets..... absolutely :D
