  • I think the problem people have with your video is partly that cyclists already have somewhat of a poor image to some car drivers and in some sections of the press. With cyclists jumping red lights & banging on their cars the last thing we need is someone adding to that myth that we are law unto ourselves.

Your right in that it is pretty scary being brushed by a vehicle on the road (I've been hit by a few myself) however whilst the car was a bit close, it did nothing wrong in overtaking you as the HWC does state that you can overtake a cycle on chevrons. But your actions following it the undertaking etc were just as bad & you were lucky that the van did not take you off as it came past the road furniture on its right.

As others have said just take a second to consider your actions & if you are generally worried about safe riding on roads then as a member of BR search the commuting forums and you will see many good points and tips from other commuters with loads of experience.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Aruthurdefy, I'm guessing that you may be under 18, so I will cut you some slack.

Being a good driver/motorcyclist/cyclist is all about anticipating the actions of others, being ready to deal with mistakes they make and building it in to your riding/driving plan. Try to focus your energy on being ready to adapt to problems rather than getting aggressive at those who you come in conflict with. The mark of an advanced driver is someone who can progress through traffic without conflict, adapting to threats, building in space where necessary and taking opportunities when safe.

You also need to be very careful about defaming people. For example if you video someone, make allegations against them which are untrue and make a film about them, which you publish, they could bring a case against you for defamation. So if you are going to say a person's driving is inconsiderate or dangerous, familiarise yourself with the charging standards for those offences to back up the claim. Make it clear that its your opinion and refrain from engaging in anything which could be a public order offence such as threatening behavior.

good luck with your research. Start here:
google "police roadcraft", "defamation law uk", "cps charging standard for bad driving", "Public Order Act 1986"
