edited February 2013 in MTB buying advice
Evening guys.

Well the time has come to dust the bike off and get back into cycling again for 2013 and I cant wait :D

Since I last rode at the end of 2012 I have ditched the rigid carbon forks (still got them though) and installed a set of Manitau Minute forks and while I have had a little ride and I am loving sus by the way, I am noticing the extra weight quite a lot, here she is as of this evening:

1167kgfebruary2013.jpg

So... I want to get the bike a bit lighter still so I am after a light weight seat post to begin with if anyone can help me ?

The last one I had was the KCNC scandium one but it was a vertical post and sat me a bit too close to the bars, so I want a seat post that goes back a bit at the top, as you can see I clearly know what am talkin about

I need a 31.6mm x 350mm and cheap and as light as possible please.

Many thanks in advance 8)

    Thanks supersonic :D

Thats actually very good, they offer 2 sizes:

    31.6mm x 250mm - £43.44 - 151g
    31.6mm x 300mm - £54.99 - 173g (non in stock)

Previous post I had was the KCNC Ti Pro Lite which came in at 167g but cost me £100 so the Exotic one is very good value for money.

So the only question remaining is, how can I find out if the 250mm one will be long enough not to cause me any problems ?

Quick check of my seat post height and its showing 195mm from the frame where the post goes in up to the seat rails, so would I be right in thinking I need at least the 300mm one ? and would that still leave enough going into the seat tube to be safe ?

    Many thanks

They do a layback one called the Cobra. You need at least 3 inches in the frame to be safe really.

I use the standard 350x31.6, great piece of kit.

Are you one of those poor people who still has a steam powered bike?

Am lost with the charge comments ?

And I am still at a loss with the post thing, I searched until gone 1am this morning.

I just want a layback seatpost 31.6 x 350mm sub 200g without it costing 300 quid but am struggling to find one :?

How much layback do you need?

Oh good question, I wasnt aware there was an option here ?

All I know is my standard seat and seat post with the Cube was really comfortable and that was a layback seat post but when I got a straight one my knees were way too close to the bars and it all felt uncomfortable.

I have reduced my stem too from 100mm to 70mm so I think I am right in thinking the bars are another 30mm closer still.

If I had the option I would like to go further back than my standard post.

I take it your saddle is as far back as it will go on the post?

Hmm I aint sure to be fair I never really messed with it much, but the straight posts put me way too close, this is what mine looks like today, excuse the mud

Is saved a good half a kg last time I upgraded me seat and seatpost and its something I want to do again but properly this time as the straight post wasnt right for me or the bike.

Easton EA70 31.6 x 350 £39.99 but only 10mm offset and it sounds like you want more

Hey thats really good stubs thanks for that.

I dont mind an extra 25g for that price, but yeah it doesnt appear to go back far enough, I will check other makes of Easton seatposts and see if am lucky :D

Is that an alu bolt in your seatpost? Did you fit that?

New Ultimate are great, but not that cheap. Look for an alu one from the US or Europe, or I may have one still.

Yeah its a soft red ally bolt in there, 2 of with same type of bolts on, never caused me a problem for the year I ran it like that over all kinds of terrain.

I'll get on that New Ultimate brand right away :D

Yeah I understand they need to be changed.

Am getting somewhere with the seatpost dilemma, found this:

Not the prettiest or lightest but not far away and price is good, looks my best option at the moment.

Very nice Penguin, work or art, quick search shows it 31.6 350mm weight only 183gr, which is just what I am looking for.

This one says setback 16mm, how can I determine what setback I need ?

Thank you for the idea too looks a very nice post.
  • I believe you measure from the centre of your post to the centre of the clamp at 90degree angle. You can compensate for the lack of layback by simply raising the saddle. Of course, its not a good idea if you have gotten your saddle set at the optimum height already.

I have searched high and low for a decent (20mm+) layback seatpost 31.6 x 350mm sub 200g and there just doesnt seem anything out there.

The best I have seen so far is the Thomson Masterpiece with a 16mm layback but some posts I have read say that theres hardly any layback at all, so I might have to go with this and twist my bars forward further away from me and I think thats the best I am gonna get.

I'll save 150 odd gram on the seatpost for over 100 quid, when I just saved 100 gram on changing from token lock grips to kcnc foam ones for £8.99 lol if only all reductions were as cheap :)

    There's plenty, just not cheap.

Ritchey WCS or Superlogic, Bontrager XXX Lite, Easton EC90.

Stated weight is for the zero layback, this might be a few grams heavier though. Still, will be light!

Can you check this for me mate please ?

Says 157g is that for the layback version,or where it says 0mm offset is that the weight for the straight version ?

The weight is definitely for the straight version.
