Basic turbo training

Hi all
Just getting back into road cycling. Currently work is interfering with rides, maybe able to get a 20 hilly miler in 1-2 a week at the moment (weather permitting) but I have a turbo trainer. Anyone suggest any basic workouts to get the fitness up and start the weight loss?? Probably get to use the turbo 2-3 times a week?

1 hour, with 2 x 20 mins at level you can just about hang on to and feel tired as it ends.
    or 3 x 15 mins.

chuck in some shorter now and again for a change.

No more than an hour, and make it tell!

If you want to be bored.

Have a look at TrainerRoad. No need to join if you don't want to but you can look at the workouts for ideas to mix things up.

    +1

I find 2 x 20 minutes fairly brutal - sitting right on the limit for 20 mins requires me to psyche myself up to be able to finish them!!! However, the numerous gains are worth it. I wouldn't tend to this more than two times a week - other turbo sessions consist of sitting at 80 to 85% of Max HR and actually enjoy the film I am watching!!! I also do Sufferfest video sessions with my mates which helps with motivation.

Eat a banana / fruit after the sessions and drink plenty of water to rehydrate. Don't raid the fridge.....

  • Hi

I'm looking at buying a turbo trainer, I've found these two but not sure if they both the same model?

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-flu ... l-trainer/

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/eli ... k-ec029651

What one do we think is the better? I'm a little confused ;-)

    Thanks loads

They are not the same - one is a fluid unit, which will be quieter and you will use the gears to add resistance, the other is a magnetic one with variable reisistance.

I have an Elite Supercrono Power Fluid which I think is hard to beat for what it cost (£150, gone back up now though). I think that Elite crono fluid on in wiggle is basically a cheaper model with less resistance so is probably a pretty good deal, the reviews look ok.

NB - you can get that magnetic one in Evans from halfords for £96 at the moment, they are doing 20% off online. Dunno what its like though.

Depends on your budget and whether you care about noise really. One thing to think about is if you are going to use Trainer road you should look to get one that is supported by that, I think all the Elite ones are.
  • Hi,

I have had both the fluid one, and am now onto a magnetic one where you can add resistance. The fluid one's a really good starter, but I eventually 'upgraded' to the Magnetic one as I wanted to mimic steep hills and the biggest gear on my bike with the fluid one wasn't really cutting it. As to noise, they were both pretty much the same as far as I can tell, and they're a good brand generally.

    Then you're over geared
