Question on behalf of an overweight friend

He's probably at 5'10 and I would take a wild guess here and say he weighs in at 16 stone easily, maybe even 17 stone! He keeps meaning to purchase a road bike as he's apparently signed up to the L2B event which takes place in June. I really fear for the lad. We discussed it over a pint of Aspels (probably not the wisest of ideas) and the conclusion we came to was that he had extremely low will power.

Fortunately for myself, I've never weighed 16-17 stone but even if I did, at 6'1 it's not as much of a problem. Firstly, and I don't mean to offend anyone here, but how the heck is he going to get into shape before June? An ideal weight for him would surely be about 11-12 stone, no? If he can get down to 13 stone, good, but we're talking 4 stone here. That is, 4 stone to lose before June.

Has anyone else had a similar experience in losing such a significant amount of weight in such a short period of time? I know there are no magic formula's to tackle weight loss, but what did you do to lose that weight? What was the psychological aspect like?

Thanks

    Rugby build :?:
  • Rugby build ? Yes or thickset as a customer once said.
  • With significant effort and willpower I don't see why he can't get down to that weight by June.

On 1st January (this year) I weighed 15st 7lbs. Today is 35 days later and I weigh 13st 10 - I've losted 1st 11lbs in 5 weeks. This is a combination of being on Weight Watchers (don't ask) and a really solid turbo session every other day, with one long ride each weekend.

I'm certainly not starving myself on WW - in fact I'm probably going slightly over my allowance - but the point is it's getting me to eat healthier foods (even if a decent size portion of them) rather than gorging on chocolate biscuits all the time. Mmm...chocolate biscuits.

I'm doing the Marmotte in July and am aiming to get down to 11st 12lbs by then, which is a significant amount of weight loss, but when you break it down on a week-by-week basis it's less than 2lbs a week, which is only 7000 calories deficit weekly.

The point is, if he wants to lose weight then he can lose weight, but he needs to start now and put the effort in.

This is why I am starting cycling I am getting married in July and since been with the other half 5 years I have put the pounds on I am ashamed to admit!!!
I have sorted eating rubbish out near enough and now I need exercise to help me I think gym is to expensive at the minute for me due to paying for a wedding!!!
Running is not for me but I use to love cycling I use to cycle everywhere and it's one thing I am getting excited about again when I finally get myself a bike.
I wish your mate luck but he himself has to want to loose weight either that he is happy the way he is?
