A wheel and tyre for the turbo trainer, and a couple of racks for the garage, not much really.

Spending might be down this year, as Mrs C has just had a new kitchen priced at £29k

Where do you live? Really don't need to spend 29k on ya kitchen mate. The retailer will be making quite a chunk of margin out of that. There are ways of trimming that I'm sure.
Still thinking of something clever to say!
  • So far:

    £2,000 on a Rose Xeon RS-5000
    £100 on Speedplay Zeros
    £100 on Bont A-Threes
£50 on new Met Fortissimo Helmet
    £120 on Foska Jerseys
£30 on a k-edge mount for the garmin
£300 on race / event entries
£100 on new bibs (also from Rose)
£30 on some *cough* Chinese Oakleys *cough*
Oh, and £10 on a Smart Lunar R2

I think that should be about it for Road cycling this year, other than the inevitable replacement of worn out parts.

Next expense is refreshing the MTB, new tyres, seals, bearings etc, maybe changing the groupset.

Then I can sort out the winter bike through summer, new wheels, tyres, chain, cassette etc

Then I can get to starting the DH project.

Not much really, a new stem and a Garmin out front mount. less than £100 all in. I don't really need that much this year, apart from replacement of worn components as and when needed.

Oh and a pair of Assos T FI.13_s5 shorts at CHF269, but that doesn't count as it was a birthday present.
  • To my shame:

    £2,700 on a Tarmac SL4
    Tifosi shades £69
    Spesh helmet £99
    Gloves £27
    Carbon bottlecages £80
    Bottles £19

Also have a Bryton GPS on order for a further £129 = £3,123

Then a Spesh Secteur Elite for the wife £999
    helmet £70
    Tifosi shades £69
    tights £49
    Shoes/cleats etc £80
    Gloves £25
    Jersey £59
    pump £25
bottle cages, spare tubes, under-saddle bag etc £60 total £1,436

    Total spending for the wife & I = c£4,559

The staff at our LBS smile at us when we walk in

Have also got my eye on some wheels, but have pretty much blown every penny I had and some although I'd happily pay a few quid more for a few days of decent weather.

P.S. Apologies for any perceived "I've spent more than you" willy waving

    And yes, they're very good.

They come with 5 lenses, plus the real ones fit, as will the earsocks etc too.

Out of curiosity as much as anything, I'm considering getting my local opticians to check the lenses for UV protection.

£ However that not a true measure.

It's smiles per mile that counts. Not £££££

Let's say my outlay is more than compensated for :D

However I have three bikes in my garage and I'm considering selling my yeti as I haven't rode it since October and when i hit my target weight that's a trigger for buying something blingy. Shallow I know.

  • One Sunrace 5 speed freewheel. One KMC chain. Total cost less than £25.

What WOULD I buy? A 'new' 7-8 speed rear derailleur as the existing one has seen better days, along with cold setting to 130mm, some 700c handbuilts and deep(er) drop brakes, a new lick of paint (colour matched, with replica decals, obviously) wouldn't go amiss either, new wheels, bars and associated gubbins to give my commuter a much-needed transformation, some more cyclewear, that lo-pro build I have in mind...

It's tough living the high life.
  • Its mad how it all adds up. I have to keep receipts TOP SECRET from the missus lol

    So far this year:

Sidi Carbon Wire shoes £270 in the sale
    Castelli Free aero shorts £118
    2 x Schwalbe Ultremo ZX at £50
    Wiggle Sussex Surrey Scramble £28
    Under Armour base layer £18
    Fizik saddle bag £10

Total of £494 and I'm sure I've missed a few things.

Now to order some Zipp or Reynolds Carbon rims!!!

Yep, missed the £115 I spent on front and rear lights lol

Got mine off ebay, seller was removed shortly after I made my purchase though I'm afraid.

There is a thread about choakleys over in bottom bracket though if you want other suggestions.

Cat with no tail - off topic but curious. Seen other people rage about (like that lol) choakleys not having full protection from what I can only presume to be UV. Lerk, our eyes already have UV filters? If you go to really sunny places then maybe yeah, more UV but have not heard of French people having their eyes falling out because of UV. Not that I looked but you get me, ye?

Also why stop there - wear UV protected glasses everyday in all conditions? Just from the posts I've seen it talked about like it's absolutely critical.
  • Problem with sunglasses with little to no UV protection is that they actually let in more UV as your pupils dilate. Were you wearing no glasses at all, your eyes would be filtering as much UV as possibly by your pupils contracting, then by you squinting.
Essentially, using crap glasses is worse for your eyes than wearing nothing at al because you're losing your bodies natural defence against UV without substituting it with anything else.
That's my understanding of it anyway.

With the choakley lenses, I'm looking to get mine properly UV tested at an opticians before I use them in proper sunlight. For the time being, they're just being used at night (I do a lot of night riding) and in low light with the yellow lenses. Times when UV index will be low anyway.

Right, makes sense. Though on top squinting and pupils contracting I think eyes do have an actual UV filter in built. I heard. :p

Just calculated everything....it is on a nerdy spreadsheet

Comes under £300 and it is not even April....no significant component changes on the bike

Main items are the winter Campag Jacket (love this item!)...various bibs and bobs from Planet X and today's Lidl purchases......at least I got a Track pump for a fiver!

And my bike maintenance to come soon ....new pads....new commute tyres...new 105 chain and cassette...servicing tools/ or total strip down service...BC membership next week too etc etc :(

After over 18 months road cycling and approaching 2500 miles later...I can safely say that I have most of my wardrobe covered for all 4 season for commute and weekend rides...the things I keep my eye on are 'enhancements' to the status quo....
