The actual RT82 sole is as hard and unflexing as the road shoe but with a rubber surround to inset the cleats, so I think the underlying structure is the pretty much the same on both types of shoe.

As they look more like a traditional pedal and closer to an sl-spd type pedal, is the reason that they're more suitable to longer distance road riding as there's heel support?0 -
Nothing wrong with these and it saves having to pay for more for cleats.

Spd's are not specifically for MTB riding. They are good for all aspects of riding and more sensible for walking in.
A heel on a cycling shoe is for comfort when walking and does not aid long distance rides....................................................................................................
If you want to be a strong rider you have to do strong things.
However if you train like a cart horse you'll race like one.0
