Head down, bum up?

So I had a bike fit at the weekend, and one of the questions I asked was 'what does a lower hand hold do', in terms of efficiency or power etc. I didn't get a clear enough answer really.
I can see the lower centre of gravity being a large part of it, but are there different groups of muscles used?
The fitting I had shows me to be in a new position, with the bars about an inch higher than they were, and back a shade.

Probably makes you lower on the bike, thus more aero dynamic meaning you should go faster for the same effort when in that position??0
