Hi can anyone recommend any free software which analyses heart rate zones for a garmin edge 500. I've been using garmin connect but it only shows average and max heart rate.

Unfortunately, it's not free, but a premium Strava subscription will give you details of time spent in each zone (5 zones, customizable), an over all "suffer score", which is a metric based on time in each zone , and a "points in red" score which is based on the time in zones 4 and 5. I like it a lot!

My zones are calculated using the Karvonen method based on a resting HR of 57 and a Max HR of 190. Here's some summary output from a recent ride. I was trying a bit on this ride!

Seriously? You're recommending an illegal activity which is essentially theft. I suggest you go and find another forum if you think that's sensible advice.

As said, Golden Cheetah is free and does what you want, though it might take some getting used to and the support is forum based and fixes to issues is dependent on the good will/availability of the developers. WKO/Training Peaks do the same but are paid for and so have better support models (hopefully) including documentation.

I'd suggest trying Golden Cheetah and see how you get on.

Not to sure about software side of things,as i am a newbie at the moment ! i am just getting into ,taking seriously the question of HR when training and what zones i need to hit for max benefits!
I came across this web page and found the HR calculator very helpful?

Though i guess everyone on this forum will know their zones...But it may help!

Did not realise strava had that facility.

The calculator is garbage. Do a test to find your actual max or threshold HR and use a system that bases levels on that.

Doesn't garmin connect show this info when you click on 'Training Zones' and also allows you to add more zones if required.

Yes, GarminConnect allows you to set custom zones or calculates them using the Karvonen method, which needs resting HR and max HR. These values should really come from tests, not estimated with formula.

In the 5 zone model for the Karvonen method, the zones are basically, (<50%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, 90-100% of (HRmax - HRrest)) + HRrest.

HRmax - HRrest is call reserve heart rate (HRR in Garmin).

There are loads of other systems. I quite like the one in this document, which is based on MaxHR alone. Then there's Joe Friel's system based around Lactate Threshold HR where there's a zone 5a, 5b and 5c. There's also Sally Edward's system used in the Heart Zones Cycling book, but I'm not keen on the values she's set for the zones. Plenty others too, I haven't mentioned.

I've settled on the 5 zone Karvonen because it does seem to equate to how I feel on the bike, i.e. Tempo feels like greater than 150bpm, not 142, and my LTHR is just at the start of the Threshold Zone at 163. 5 zones also works well with Strava is easy to remember.

Whatever method you use, just be consistent or use the method adopted by the plan you're following.

Garmin Training Center ( not my spelling) is available for free download. This is different from Garmin connect as you don't need to be online as the info is stored on your laptop. Lots of heart rate stats to keep an anorak like me busy :)

It took ages to find the download on the site but it is in there somewhere :)
