  • So Bike Radar’s ‘exclusive’ on the Edge 900 was wrong! It could be an elaborate hoax but I doubt it.

Really interested in the Edge 510.

NB – I see that link has now been disabled, but for those that missed it slowtwitch.com grabbed a screenshot:

I am hoping 'social network' references mean that it will pick up live strava segment timings, or even segment installed

I'm quite relieved. At first glance there doesn't seem to be a huge upgrade benefit from the 800 to the 810, save for some added connectivity. I hope not, I don't need a reason to spend more cash!

If they added a telephone to the 810...it would be all a cyclist would ever need!

They're not going to add a telephone, seems to me that their plan is to harness the functionality of your smartphone (possibly via bluetooth). No point doing that if they build a telephone into the Edge.

I appreciate that, all I meant was.....if it had a phone.....I personally would not need a smartphone as well......I would happily trade the chance to instantly connect to facebook/twitter for routes, cadence & hrm. :)

Just checked up the differences between the new and current models.....not all that impressed.

I'm sure that the live tracking would be a novelty that would wear off pretty soon. I'll wait to see if Wiggle et al do anything on the RRP, going by what used 800's go for, it would cost me about £170 for the new model.

Same screen resolution and size! When I show my 800 to friends who dont cycle they laugh when they see the screen. They say it reminds them of a nokia 8310.

Live tracking is meh. Wireless is pointles as most people still need to plug in to charge the thing and virtual partner is available on the 800. I image it's no more user friendly either.

I though the updated iphone 5 was a joke, but this is shocking. Garmin are so lazy.

I was just about to post exactly the same thing!

And hopefully by the time the 900 is out there'll be some real competition.

This. Garmin pretty much dominate this market at the moment, but it's not gonna take much for someone to take away a lot of their business.

the only thing that makes it worth the upgrade is something that most of us have wanted for a long time - different data depending on bike/circumstances.

however that is not enough to warrant an upgrade.

I believe garmin have missed a trick with this. As someone who is on my 5th garmin (305, 705, 800, 405cx, 910xt). I was hoping for something to make me buy a 6th. But no point.

Agree it's a marginal improvement, though there will be some saying the live tracking is essential for their use case, for which I have no doubt.

I'm also a long time Garmin Edge user, bought a 305 the day they came out in early 2006 and always upgrade to the latest. I usually get at least 70% of the original purchase price back (such is life on eBay), so I'm looking to spend ITRO £120 or so to buy an 810. But for the first time, I'm in two minds.

exactly, are the marginal gains worthy of £120. I dont really think so. The only other thing is my battery life in my 800 isnt great anymore but i reckon i can replace the battery myself.

    Anyone ever done that?

I use my phone for route recording at the moment - Strava for the route and stats, and Real Time GPS Tracker for live position reporting (keeps other half from worrying if she can see I'm still moving!).

So since with the 810 I'd still need to use the phone as well for live tracking, it's a bit of a pointless feature really.

For me, the 500 to 510 upgrade might be worthwhile.
    - Touchscreen (and sounds like a better interface)
    - GPS upgrade - picks up the satellites much quicker
    - Phone connectivity - If this means you can switch routes to/from phone/tablet, then perfect for touring, trips away etc.

well I got an 800 for Christmas :) - not really worried I knew an update was coming - the edge has everything I need and I got it for £338 (performance road pack) from the shop - I knew it would get discounted so they could offload them all before the update - so I am happy enough and now more than happy given the small upgrade this is - there is nothing added that I really want tbh

I've got an Edge 500 and a 305 before that. Too be honest it's been all I've ever needed. But I may look to upgrade to the 510. Upgrading from the 500 to 510 seems a bigger jump than a 800 to 810. But I'll keep an eye out if there are any deals on 800 as they try to get rid of old stock.

    Thanks TGD.

For some one that has a 500 & has been toying with the idea of the 800 for a while( me) - the 810 seems like a good move.
