That's like saying, "No, lets not start the tour in Bath. Slough is much nicer."

Oooh, that's harsh! A bit fairer would be - let's not start the tour in Bath, Bristol is much nicer.

But anyway, that's not the point. The Tour goes to all sorts of places and not just the obvious ones. Half the point is that it showcases the less obvious. Besides, the trouble with attractive British cities is that they are all second rate compared to the good French ones. We have nothing that, for example, even comes close to Laon in terms of spectacular unspoiled gems and that's hardly one of the best known French cities.

In anycase, there's no difficulty in showing off Leeds as a nice city on the filming - it will look great.

I think you are right when it comes to towns, but the UK has a few cities up there with the best of them. Leeds is not one of them. We also do chocolate box villages rather well. Remember, we see the UK as it is and tend to see other places as they like to portray themselves. And when we travel, we tend to see interest and attraction and gloss over faults. So don't do the UK down too much.

And when it comes to hogging all the limelight, the last stage finishes in London doesn't it? Surely showcasing the abbey towns in the borders and finishing in Hull or somewhere like that would tick that particular box better than Yorkshire-London. God, they couldn't even include York in the bid. Aaaahhh.

The non-obvious place in question is the UK, not any particular part of the UK. As such, the UK should be trying to showcase itself as well as possible.

I'm sure the moors will look fantastic on telly. The midlands will be more of a struggle.

Leeds' big brown envelope was bigger than Edinburgh's big brown envelope.

    T'tour ot that Frence, surely?

More like: "Eee. Tour? Call that a Tour? These riders, soft as sh!te they are these days. When I were a lad, we used to ride twice tha' distance, and we didn't take three weeks to do it, neither. A day! That's as long as we 'ad. And we 'ad a full day's werk down t'mine after. And then anuther full day's werk at t'mill after tha'. AND we 'ad t'ride same distance 'ohm after. An' tha' were with a bike with NO WHEELS! And no saddle, an' no 'andlebars neither. Don't know they're born, these "Tour" riders..."

    Etc, etc, etc...

So you heard Boycott on t'wireless then?

I hadn't, as it happens, when I wrote that. But later that day Mrs66 mentioned to me Boycott's view on t'wireless.

Her father was a classic Yorkshireman (but without the warm generosity and deep pockets). So it wasn't too hard to predict the reaction.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

    Bike 2-A

Certainly was.. my sister worked on getting this to happen and we had so much more going for us than a wad of cash, to get the momentum leading up to this was years in the running & eventually a bit of luck/publicity from Wiggins. Yorkshire forward/visit Yorkshire whatever they want to call themselves recently have just jumped on the bandwagon & did no footwork to get cycling events to happen.

Thankfully I hear we're missing some vital urban areas on the routes in question, i had visions where anyone brave enough to wear lycra will ensure a beating for being batty man, then there's the optional mugging zones only passable when jeremy kyle is on tv.

I hope it does encourage a lot more targets onto the roads round these parts the scr scene is a bit lonely, but saying that if it gets crowded near bushu avenue i'll be finding XC routes to work rather than waiting patiently to overtake a brompton.

Leeds, that's down south isn't it?
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    In the middle apparently.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
