Did ANYONE get that I was being sarcastic there? :?

Yes - I was just highlighting the alternative explanation that also supported your point.

should I have mudguards? - yes
    Have I bothered? = no
    am I bothered? - no

If I get covered in road dirt, so be it. I have something called a washing machine for my clothes and the bike will get cleaned at some point.
Cannondale Trail 6 - crap brakes!
    Cannondale CAAD8
  • You're right, I don't really care about people around me.. If you're getting sprayed by my wheel water then you're too close.. As for my drivetrain you're also correct.. It's a bike, it gets washed and if it breaks it gets fixed.. Meh..

I would rather stay drier and more comfortable and therefore able spend more time on the bike without getting a chill

    Can you say 'solipsist'?

Or the person washing your jerseys/jackets.
A CX bike is a work horse to be used in foul conditions, not a prancing bling bike.

    Short answer - Yes.

    This.

So your victims aren't actually riding with you, then.
  • Apologies if this has been posted but if you're soaked by the person in front, grow some bollocks and drop them.

If you can't do that, get out training and build some power.

Exactly. People whining that "wah, I'm getting wet sitting in behind someone on a rainy day letting them do my work for me" deserve nowt.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

    Bike 1
    Bike 2-A

Last time this happened to me was crossing the Kessock Bridge. Short of picking the guy up and throwing him into the sea, I was stuck between the two sets of railings. Every time I asked to pass, he just sped up a little (but nothing like enough). When we did finally both stop to cross the road, I did thank him for covering my front in sh!t. If you're not going to use mudguards, please stay out of the way...

ETA - I have the Strava KoM for that segment so I know that getting faster isn't going to help

No - he'd have ridden over the top of the guy, I'm sure...

None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

In those rather unusual circs, isn't the answer to drop back?

By dropping back, there was no chance of passing the guy for the 1km+ of the bridge. I guess I should have realised that if they guy isn't considerate enough to think about the fact he didn't have guards on and therefore covering me in sh!t he'd also not be considerate enough to give me room to pass. Instead, he wanted to try to show he was quicker than me...

As we are not actually racing, but cycling as part of the traffic I'd say it is inconsiderate in wet weather.

Cycling up a hill with someone like that, the closing velocities are going to be slow, so that even if someone does go past they'll get covered beforehand.

Why should I make it unpleasant for someone else?
  • No, my 'victims' aren't riding with me as I cycle to work.. If a little spray concerns you feel free to try overtake me is my general feeling on the matter.

There are only two reasons for not fitting guards.
    Looks and weight.

A clarty* bike does not look good.
A clarty rider does not look good.

Unless you are in an Elite race, the weight won't make the slightest bit of difference.

So what's the real reason then?
It can't be laziness and selfishness can it?

*Clarty is an underused word these days.

Provided there's space to overtake you or you make space. Speaking personally, I don't much like a face full of road crap. Normally, if I've caught up with you, I'm plenty fast enough to find the 6' more to pass you

I think it was always "underused" in England. I never heard it before I moved to Scotland

Still very much alive in lawyer-speak, in my experience. Not a fan of outwith though, clumsy word.

As for the thread subject - wish I'd left time to fit them to the bike this morning - might have saved an hour of post-ride cleaning. :P

Yup - another word seemingly only used in Scotland. I'd come across the use of "without" meaning the same thing (outside) - some hymn or other "There is a green hill far away without a city wall"

Is "blethering" Scots only? Ir does it trickle down to the north east as well?

I have a Collins Scots dictionary somewhere.

And dropping weight from the rider is probably a better bet anyway, so unless you are in an Elite race, train harder to loose that weight to compensate, if that is your inclination.

    or with obvious sarcasm tags
    Mudguards?

    Hell No!

    Why bother???

You just need to wash your clothes more often
    Clean your bike more often
    Replace your clothes more often
Replace parts on your bike more often
Get soaking wet feet every time it rains
    You annoy everyone around you
    Smell more

    Mudguards? Nah.

Again, I've only heard it in Scotland.
