I ride Shaley Brow quite often and it never fails to hurt, sometimes I climb back up once I have descended towards Billinge to enjoy the downhill as a reward . Anyone tried moss bank and crank road climbs which are nearby? There are quite a few good hills around this area...
Good magazine as well. Thanks for posting the link.0 -

Moss bank and Fairfield hill in Crank are decent little climbs. I've just got back from another slog up the brow. Can't get warm!0 -
Even thought I live in Crank and can see Shaley from the window, I avoid it at all costs. That's plainly because I don't fancy my chances of getting up it without pushing0

I find Shaley the toughest of all the local climbs. I know that if I'm going to fail and suffer the walk of shame it'll be on Shaley. The others can hurt and I may have to grind and suffer, but there's never any doubt in my mind that I'll get up them.
I have a route that's fairly short but incorporates a number of the local climbs. I do it maybe once or twice a month when I'm trying to work on my climbing. I do Shaley first, then across to Upholland and up the Beacon (climb2), drop down to Newburgh and through Parbold. Up Hunters Hill (climb3), down to Wrightington, across to Roby Mill and up Bank Brow (climb4). Turn right and go up Farley Lane onto the Beacon again (climb5) and then either head for home or loop through Parbold again and go up Stoney Lane (climb6) instead of Hunters.
Having said that, I set off to do this route a couple of weeks ago and chickened out after Hunters Hill and headed for the flatlands.
A few months of that circuit and I can sometimes keep the back of the group in sight on a club run :roll:0 -

In teh summer I do crank road (fairfield hospital), shaley, alma hill, beacons hill, parbold hill, down courage brow, up hunters, down appleby bridge, up bonks brow, up crow lane.
There's also a famed 13 cols of west lancs as wellThe dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

The way I go is to descend down main st in billinge then when you come to the mini roundabout turn left onto birchley road. Continue descending then as the road widens and you start to climb, moss bank road I on your left. You can't miss the turning as there is a right hand turning lane to use. Moss bank road has a short climb at the start but continue on when you reach the top until you see a pub on your right (this is the top of the moss bank climb), drop down then go round the roundabout at the bottom and back up the climb.0 -

Have to say I am very, very poor on hills (living in the flatlands of Liverpool I don't have to worry about them ) so I struggle on Holborn Hill in Ormskirk! The only reason I went up it was to avoid the hill I'd just come down (Prescott Road I think) because the surface was so bad.0

Cleat Eastwood wrote:Long Heyes Ln,
I made a map for my mate which included that lane, and he went to ride it at the weekend. I recieved an emotinal text off him on sunday asking for me to urgently update the map before someone gets killed! He said it's not a proper road and eventually deteriorates into a muddy, woodland track made out of bits of old brick. He said at the bottom he had to unclip and traverse a freezing river with his bike on his back. He was offered help by a couple in a 4 x 4 but his pride prevented him from accepting. He said it took him until early evening to regain the feeling in his feet!!0
