Anyone from Lancashire/Merseyside will have heard of Shaley Brow. Page 19 of this online mag has a nice article covering it. You need to zoom in with your browser:

  • What a great little mag! I quite literally live less than a mile from Shaley, and I still avoid the fecker on a regular basis, opting for the much softer- but much longer way back to my house either thru Hall Green or Billinge
  • Bustacapp that is fecking brilliant.

I saw teh scally mcnally the other week with his mate going up the hill - it is a nasty hill. He over took me parbold hill too - we said hello and I said 'race ya'....and he was off.

More to the point the bit about Kirkby CC is brilliant, when ken matthews died they decided to close the club - so many memories - if you can be arsed check out about Kirkby CC it was onc one of the strongest clubs in the country. Wow that is just amazing how did you find it? Is it local or national - doesnt seem to be any info in the about link.

Good find, really liked the Shaley Brow article, and found myself nodding in agreement all the way through, including the fridge.
I bloody hate that 14% sign Note to self ride it more in 2013 and stop avoiding it.

Its true about that bit about it looking like a wall - I planned to ride it twice a week over the summer - think I did it 3 times in total.

Glad you liked it. Someone posted a link to it on my mates Strava page. No idea who makes it!

I do it once a week and when I started I couldn't do it for a couple of months (had to get off and push). The other week I did it seated with a cog to spare on my non triple/non compact!

Thanks for the link. The whole magazine/blog was really interesting.

I think I will keep well clear of Shaley Brow!

Group of local guys set it up, I know some of the contributors but I haven't been involved in it. Refreshing to read a magazine with no adverts, great to read Pete Matthews saying he can't feel the difference in different frames, talking straight :)
  • Do you reckon there's any truth in Wiggo being 'scared' of Shaley? :D

Cleat, it's James Maloney from the Echo who is mainly responsible. I heard about it from Twitter, it's been seeded there for about 6 weeks. First issue is free, not sure if that means they intend to charge for future issues.

    I think they've done a good job.
  • Got to admire you for getting up Shaley Brow Bustacapp, i avoid it like the plague i hate the bugger. I ride through Kings Moss from Skem and intend to have a go but when i get to the T-junction i turn right towards Red Cat instead.

  • I don't think its that bad to be fair, granted, first few times you do it - it huts like a fcuker!

In terms of steep/sharp hills in that area then rivington has the worst (best) in my opinion.

I think anglznarke (or whatever its called) is a right lung buster

I think A'arke is a fair comparison. Similar in that it has three stages- first bit steep as feck, the plateaus....then third bit not as steep but nail-in-the -coffin! I remember doing ESCA schoolboy IOM hill climbs up Anglezarke. They put a brick behind our back wheels. Psychological mind meld lol? I'm surprised more local clubs don't use Shaley for local HCs, opting more for Ashurst.

Anyway, those of local knowledge, who's familiar with Sandersons? A friend of mine argues it pishes all over Shaley!

Sandersons isnt too bad, you can find a nice rhythm up it. One that is a real bugger is Long Heyes Lane, just off lees lane - you have to sort of offroad a bit to get to the rideable bit but gives you a real work out.

By the way harry middletons have used shaley for HC's, they change it every year - this year it was hunters hill.

If you want to challenge yourself they set off (up shaley) from just by Pimbo Lane up to by the housey gatey thing at the top - its about a mile. I think i did it just under 7 mins. try it in the summer - its a good test.

Thing about shaley is like it says in the piece, its like a wall - I actually stopped once to take a pic of it - it really is like an optical illusion.

  • Thanks to black ice the other week I had to stop and put my foot down due to wheelspin and the back end coming out. It was right at the exposed 'nipple on the tit' bit right near the top.
  • Ey, Long Heyes Lane is rough as a badgers down the bottom there. Not been up there for years.

Don't mind Hunters so much. Nothing gets the legs wobbling quite like the sight of the Mur of Billinge rising before ye though...

Did Shaley Brow today for the first time in months. It 's a tough climb, but it wasn't quite as bad as I remembered
  • To be fair that looks like a tough climb. I'm not sure why the local clubs avoid it though. Our club does this one at least once a month - I can assure you it's a horror and probably just as bad if not worse:

Me too. I even filmed it with my sons spywatch!!

And it seemed a lot easier probably because of a good tail wind up it today.

Can anyone who has experience with Shaley Brow let me know how it compares with Banks Brow (Roby Mill) and Parbold Hill?
  • lucan2
    lucan2 Posts: 293
Bank Brow - steep, but short - much easier than Shaley Brow other than a couple of hundred metres at its steepest where it feels like Shaley but you haven't got half a mile of increasing pain/gradient in your legs on Bank Brow.
Parbold Hill - longer than Shaley, but get into a rythym and it's nowhere near as tough as Shaley.

I'll qualify the above by saying that I will never be described as a climber.

Hey thanks mate this has helped me decide to hit them as soon as the weather clears!
