Back injury

I'm curious to know what folk do when the dreaded "bulged disc" shows its (really) ugly head?

Has anyone here managed to go back to normal riding on a road bike after such an injury at the lower back and after physiotherapy?

Have you had to make any changes to your riding style, training schedule? Bike? How long did it take before you were able to do 2-3 hrs training rides without issues?

I've been off the road bike for 3 months and only now started going out on the mountain bike (on the road) and only for 30-45 minutes at a time and only on the flats

Thing is once you know how bad the injury can be you are kind of scared to damage your back again so I'm not rushing it but I hate seeing my Cervelo collecting dust in the garage...

Would like to learn from others' experience, thanks!

I've been clear of it for a while. When I did get it I was only off the bike for a few days. Doc said for me to carry on as normal as possible. Anti inflams dealt with the pain. It has not affected my cycling at all. I'm just really careful at picking up heavy stuff now.

The only thing I can't do is ride the MTB as aggressively now, for fear of compression from jumps etc.

Have you had a proper bike fit? The fitter should be able to help make sure you back is not placed under undue pressure.

I had a bike fit about 3 years ago and never had issues since. They can't tell if the injury happened because of cycling or something else but as it is now (after 3 months of physio and a bit of swimming) I can at least do most things almost normally but I cannot sit for too long and specifically can't sit on the road bike. On the mountain bike it feels fine but I'm taking it easy...

    thanks!
