  • Do you have bits laying around? Or are you having to start from scratch?

    Look 586, damn sight better than your average bike and you don't see them everywhere.

    A classic frame off eBay, something like a C40/C50, fit a new Athena group and some nice handbuilt wheels. Velocity on record hubs for example.

    A C50 President just went on eBay for 1400 in my size, it was immaculate too!

    £2.5k - if it was for training/riding rather than racing, I'd go for the Pinarello Rokh built with 105 for that price.

    :lol::lol:
  • If I could manage it within budget, either a custom Mercian in 853 with Rival or Ultegra and some good quality handbuilt wheels, or a carbon fibre Dolan in whatever configuration I could get for the money...
  • 2,500 quid you say. What if you've only got 10p legs?

    Canyon CF SLX 2013, a 800g frame, full ultegra and a £700 wheelset. I know not everyone likes the brand (i do) but these are fantastic value for money. I have the CF which is damn good so no doubt this will be better.

    Why does nobody go custom? You could get a great, unique custom frame, have enough a decent fit-out which yo cold upgrade over the years, as and when. I like having bikes that are unique to me and not mass produced and bought off the rack.

    I don't see the point of going custom. These "mass produced" bikes are designed and developed to be competitive at the highest level and are built in the best fabs in the world. I don't trust some random dude to build me something awesome in his shed, especially for only 2500 bones.

    The thing is you don't go to some random dude...

    You won't get a custom carbon frame for anywhere close to that price, and it still won't be engineered as well as high-end mass-produced frame.
    You can get a custom titanium frame for that price from Enigma or someone else, but it's still not "unique" as only the geometry is custom, not the whole frame.

    I'm not sure what your definition of unique is but if I have a frame built for me, to my measurements and specifications, and no one else's, then have it painted to a precise livery and colours of my own choosing I cannot see how it could be anything other than unique.
