Try to distract him on the start line.

    Hi all. Update is this.
Weve discussed our race at work and my opponent says that a sportive isn’t a race!
But he agrees that it might be difficult for us to get in the same race because I don’t have a licnese yet so organisers might not accept me and we would be in different races anyaway in a crit. So he very generously says I can practice if I want and do the race later in the year.
    But…
I am thinking though that a time trial will be better. Consensus on here is that I will get thrashed in a road race. This also seems to be the view of everyone else I know, including all of my cycling friends!
I’ve never done a TT either. What distance do you guys think would give me the best chance?

First of all he's right. A sportive isn't a race.

As I posted before, a 10mm TT would be the race of truth. Your opponent should know a local club 10 course, which more than likely will be a bit more 'sporting' in course profile (might have a hill in it!). Providing it's an out and back course, Just get a mate to turn up, set you off 5 mins within each other, mate goes to official finish line and records the times. Simple.

Jeez just realised I've suggested the world's shortist race! I hope everyone realised I meant 10 miles!

Do love this thread, this reminds me of some guys at my old work that used to boast about their running skills all day and ended up having a race. Workplace Willy waving contest :-)

I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast...

Yup, because you might just get the jump on him for the first 10 metres when he's not lookin', otherwise he'll just tear the legs of yah, over anything else!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

So you have not raced, or tried a TT, to answer your question what would give you the best chance, offer him your hand and admit to being a muppet and letting the beer do the talking, then move on. You may then want to try somes TT's or races and see what the standards are like and how you stack up

More chance his opponent turning down the challenge or dropping out and a more entertaining story for everyone else.

Are we supposed to be proving something? :)

Of course! That a gold standard sportive rider is a better cyclist than a 2nd Cat racer
