Happened to a neighbour of mine a few years ago in a quiet residential side street of Honor Oak in SE London. He resisted, got beaten up and bike taken. The street in question is fine but just on the other side of a footbridge going over the railway line is a dodgy estate from where these guys probably came.

Think it's pretty rare on roads. I use an off road route to work and back at times during the winter, and one part of the route is close to a run down estate. Not had any issues as 7:30 am and 6pm is a bit early for them to be out. Also having a good front light destroys their night vision. I won't go haring round the canals at night though. Part of the TPT (Trans Pennine) near me is accessed through a rough estate, and I know gangs go down to the TPT drinking/smoking. If I'm doing a late evening blast in the dark, I usually come back that way, but at full pelt, lights on eyeball fry mode.

Last night my son had trouble with a lad at high school. He'd earlier tried to pin my son against a wall by his throat, my son had then used the pinch and twist the skin in the arm pit technique (flippin hurts) to get free. Son gets bike from rack, lad re-appears to try and push him off, son shines 3W LED headlamp into lads eyes, he can't see, son cycles off.

If somebody is planning on taking my bike off me they better be ready for a scrap because I'm definitely not planning on giving it away!

Thankfully chavs around my area must think expensive carbon road bikes with their drop handlebars, 700c 23 tyres and efficient cycling position are too uncool.

They stick to riding a ridiculously small BMX with the saddle as low as it will go in the most inefficient and leg burning position.

I doubt the neds would know what they're looking at if a Pinarello Dogma 2 with a Dura Ace di2 groupset and Zipp wheels went past. (not that I could afford one).

As for the police video posted on here, I don't understand why the police are constantly spraying harmful cs gas / pepper spray into his face when he is not doing anything?

  • I saw an attempted bike jacking in Bristol a few years ago (on Whiteladies road for those who know it). This guy was riding past a group of teenagers when one stepped into his path and demanded he hand over his bike. The guy on the bike head butted the teenager then got off his bike and set about the rest of the group (even the girls). There were a few bloody noses that night - I guess they didn't try it again.

For future reference, it is better to take one's helmet off before head butting the assailant or not ?

You'll do more damage to them if you take it off....

Well, the cyclist in question was not wearing a helmet which certainly seemed effective under the circumstances.
  • Keep helmet on. Heat seeking headbutt with helmet still on will still do enough to cause a distraction at the least. It will also take any incoming blows.

A swift toe punt (Providing you have unclipped) with your cleats will be effective too.

  • well all in, probably one reason to be a RLJ :)

That is why I RLJ when I ride through the centre of our town (Hastings) very early in the mornings on weekends, especially after hot summer nights. Too many yobs wandering the streets, hopped up on cheap booze and adolescent hormones and looking for trouble. I have had a few guys had a go at me over the years, enough to make me very cautious.

As for the red lights and traffic, I am talking about VERY early in the morning. i typically ride between 4:30am and 6:30am so no traffic, at least in the early part of the ride, when the yobs are still about.

I would disown my son if he pinched someone in a fight.

    [I don't actually have a son.]
  • Another reason to ride a Carrera!
  • Have to say, having tried the daytime running mode of my new Lezyne Micro rear 70 lumens tail light by looking directly at the fecker, I've come to the conclusion that it could indeed be used to temporarily incapacitate a would-be vagabond if needed.

I once also mistakenly rode my £4k bike thru one of Cape Towns smaller, less well known but equally as squalid townships (Du Noon). I say once.....I actually did it twice! There's also unfortunately a race track next to the township. Didn't take the locals long to figure out the weekly summer evening crits could yield easy pickings as local riders rode out to the circuit

As a means of protecting yourself you could easily fit a police style Extendable baton in to your saddle bag just flicking it out will make them back off you wouldn't even need to use it.

Not sure but I am fairly sure that either trying to fight back or run away with cleats on is going to result in disaster. Obviously the answer is to always carry a pair of Doc Martens in your back pockets and ask the mugger, kindly, if he would mind waiting whilst you change into your bovver boots.
