Bike-Jacking?

A colleague told me today that his cycling pal was out on a ride at the weekend, was just approaching home, waiting at a set of lights in the small market town of Abingdon (11am on a Saturday morning) when 3 eastern-european gentlemen pedestrians informed him under no uncertain terms that they would be relieving him of his Cervelo.

Bloke in question retorted that under no conditions would they do that, and high-tailed off.

(i expect there was more pigeon english and swearing in this exchange than i have described.)

DOES THIS ACTULLY HAPPEN???

  • I wonder what would have gone down if this happened to the infamous guy who kicked out at the 'racist'. As it was a multiracial affair he would have assumedly intervened and kicked out at the polish attackers, then reached out to fellow forum-goers to justify his actions.

On a serious note I have thought that riding round on thousands of pounds worth of gear can attract the wrong sort or people.

Hell of a good reason to remember to stop in a low gear.

  • When I cycled through parts of London on my spesh venge 2 weeks a go it felt like a wad of case moving through London the looks I got and the feelings. So got in a low gear and went for it. Until I got to Knightsbridge :)
  • Well, that is the 'don for you.

Happened to me 3-4 years ago when I was 15. Guy put his hand on handlebar, one hand in pocket and told me to get off. Assuming it was a weapon and the fact that he looked like he could have me I gave it up.

There was CCTV evidence. The police knew who it was. The guy was already going to be seen in court for other offences. However, I got nothing back apart from several visits to the police station. :/
  • Oh dear ........ didn't need to worry about this. Reason not to clean the bike and ride in groups.

Maybe your friend could fit the South African anti-car jacking device to his bike

Might bump the weight up a bit though
  • A colleague of mine had his bike jacked on the ring road around Oxford, not far from Abingdon, a couple of years ago. It was early evening and a white van pulled up and asked him to stop, when two guys jumped out and grabbed the bike from him.

I can't remember who it was, but during the Giro, the commentators were talking about one of the riders who, in training on his own, was quite badly attacked while riding, he came too on the side of the road with his bike gone. Since hearing that, it made me think more about the potential to have your bike stolen from under you.
The difficulty of identifying a high priced bike and a low priced one of the same manufaturer when glancing at it isn't easy, I'm sure that any decent brand bike would be a target.
People get mugged for 20 quid, let alone something worth thousands, and most people who would be in the game would be well aware of the potential resell value of a high end bike throughout Europe. It stands to reason we are targets.

The only thing that makes me think it won't happen to me is, like most, I use cleats - I don't think anyone would be mean enough to take my bike and make me walk in cleated shoes....
I see a scenario of getting pulled over, punched in the face, pushed off my bike, bike taken and lifted into the back of a van, van drives off, I start wadddling along the road on my cleats, driver sees the cleated walk in mirror, driver returns and gives me a lift to the bus stop, lets me out, punches me in the face one more time, then drives off.
I also see an extra scenario for some people. All of the above...second punch in the face, van pulls off leaving you at the bus stop, van gets about 1/4 mile up the road, you see the brake lights come on, van U turns, drives back up to you, winds the window down, sticks his head out, says "you f*ckin nonce..", then throws 2 red valve caps in your face.

Avoid all the trouble, buy a Trek.

I do actually worry about this ! There is a steep, slow, out of saddle uphill section at the start of my ride home and I often pass groups of blokes who could easily relieve my of my bike. I have played out the scenario in my head and it always ends with me having a broken nose and waddling up the road in my cleated shoes......or in my socks if one of the theives has the same size feet as me

  • Haha that mace clip is hilarious. What a complete nutter. I'm surprised he didn't get tasered to death whilst he was in that toilet cubicle, wouldn't have been able to miss!

  • Must be old and paranoid. Just looked at the British Cycling insurance scheme ...... £203 a year gulp. Phoned my house content insurers, no problem we'll add it to the high value list of products for home and away from home cover ......... £0.

I am a big fan now.

It does make you think especially when you consider it may not be just the cost of the bike, but if you have a Garmin 800 on the handle bars, and a £150 light etc...

    Not funny!!
