Advice about best indoor training setup sought

Hi all
I'm working through page after web page of info regarding options for indoor turbo training this winter and it's starting to confuse me! I'm looking to you experienced indoor trainers for advice please.
What I have is a Kurt Kinetic Rock & Roll turbo and riser, but with NO other equipment such as computer or sensors. I am hoping Father Christmas will drop off a Garmin 800 with HR and cadence....!
So question is, what would be my best option with that in mind? From reading it would appear that training with power is best, failing that virtual power and after that heart rate alone. So with the above set up I should be able to use virtual power with a suitable program?
This is where it gets confusing. I have looked at Trainer Road, which requires a laptop and USB ANT+ dongle. I have an iPad, not a laptop/pc in the garage! I see that Kurt Kinetic are looking to launch an app that will allow you to use iPad/ iPhone as your power display, but that has not been launched yet. I could just get the Kurt Kinetic computer either wired or wireless. What do you think?
So, what other options am I overlooking/ would you consider or indeed recommend?
Thanks all
PP

For the Kurt you can use speed to estimate power. You will need a speed sensor on the rear wheel (a basic cateye with rear wheel sensor will work).
Then, use this to get the estimated power: http://www.kurtkinetic.com/powercurve.php
I used the formula in excel and created a table of values based on speed.0
