Is a 4 hour motorway drive an equivalent drive to popping over to Sainsbury's for the weekly shop? I'm not sure per journey is more useful.
Seemingly trivial things that cheer you up

Not more useful, but per bn miles doesn't tell the whole picture. Average journey length increased by c.50% between 1972 and 2000, so if the yearly number of casualties stayed constant, that alone would account for a 1/3 reduction in fatalities per bn miles.

That would still mean driving is getting safer, so per billion miles is the right measure.

Oh of course... that's why I posted it! It's getting impressively safer on all metrics, and is still way safer than France, where it's quite sticky, and the départements where they've raised the normal speed limit back up to 90kph, the fatalities have risen again.

Long journeys tend to be on motorways which are safer.

...which would tend to back up my conjecture that if a lot of the extra mileage is on motorways, that by itself would lower the death rate per bn miles.
The only list that lists the death rate per 100k inhabitants is five years out of date now, which is a pity.

Ah, this is more recent, and sortable, with the change from 1980 to 2021.
EDIT - still impressive for the UK, whichever way you slice it.

It's almost like there's some sort of physical law 🤨

I had a feeling that the French changes would bring some hard data to the debate. As with the 20mph limits in Wales and London, it's not just marginal or a small sample.
Anyway, I think that debate belongs in the other thread.

That the person in the car was only lightly injured... one of the main road to les Arcs, Tignes, les Trois Vallées had a bit of a rockfall...

Looks like I've earned $64 from four weeks of Facebook photos. Now that I'm a 'professional', I guess that the next camera will be tax-deductable. 😃

How many views is that?

It's back down to 400k rolling average now, as not surprisingly interest is less when I'm in Devon (and I post far fewer photos). Reckon it was roughly $3-4 per day when I was in France, and not much over $1/day when I'm here.

I'd probably earn a bit more if I did more video content (if what I read about FB payments is accurate), but I'm just going to carry on what I was doing anyway, and if it buys me a new camera after 12 months, seems like a nice bonus. June-September should be the best for views, as I'll get about eight weeks over there then, and sunny scenes and tanned legs always do well 🦵🏼🦵🏼

Haha, not seen that, but pretty accurate. Now I'm 60, I seem to have found an audience who still think of me as young...

That reminds me...
Got annoyed at one of those coffee air-press things last weekend, as the resultant black coffee was just vaguely coffee-flavoured brown water... I normally make it in a single-cup cafetiere at home, and plunge as soon as I pour the water on - of course, that means that I press all the hot water directly though the grounds at pressure (I don't wait for them to sink), whereas in the air-press thing, I realise (now) that you have to wait for the grounds to sink, otherwise they are just float above the hot water you're pressing through the filter. Idiot me, but made me happy with my cafetiere method.

Making acquaintances via random social media... turns out this chap lives in Die (he saw my posts on Bluesky), and we're going to meet up at Easter... sounds a really interesting person to get to know... would be good to go for a local walk with him and hear his thoughts/POV on things local and globally.

Looks like a Leftie

I suspect so - the 'incomers' to Die tend to be committed environmentalists because of the valley's ecological strategies
The population is a slightly strange mix of ex-communists, hippies, Front National supporters, and educated environmentalists (and an English trumpeter).
Anyway, one of my local contacts has confirmed that this chap isn't a knife-wielding maniac looking for English people to maim or murder (unless '"He's a lovely man" is their code for a knife-wielding maniac).

Ha - this cheers me up:
Getting a well-timed TGV ticket to get back to Paris CDG in June seemed to be a little complicated, and one of the suggested journeys had me going south from Valence to Nîmes to then head back north. As it's a place I've never been, I've now sorted out my day to leave my house early to get down to Nîmes centre by 9.30am, so I've got half a day there including lunchtime before catching the 14h21 TGV to CDG. Looks like it should be a superb place to wander around, not least because of its complete Roman arena, still in use (though probably not throwing Christians to the lions). I'm getting excited already.
