edited December 2012 in MTB buying advice
Hi all, I am looking at buying a full suspension, my height is 185cm or 6' 2" ish, weight 13 stone 2lb ish and have what I call normal reach/ arm lenght.

The bikes I'm looking at are all 2012 models they are as follows:

Scott Genius 30 Large
Cannondale Jekyll 3 Large
Lapierre zesty 514

Can anybody give me their thoughts of the above bikes whats good whats not? What needs upgrading? etc

Many thanks.

Personally Id have the zesty, Jekyll and then lastly the scott. Depends on the price though. 2012 models will start getting heavily discounted soon, so that might change my opinion alot. You are forgiven.

Ride all 3, buy the one you like best, you'll get all manner of responses here, there's no clear 'best' .

I've ridden a Genius and was impressed.

Fair enough. As a general tip - a link to each of the bikes would help people make any comments on spec comparisons and so on without havign to go hunting for themselves. eg Jekyll 3 http://www.cannondale.com/can/2013/bikes/mountain/overmountain/jekyll/jekyll-3

I don't have any personal experience of any of the bikes - the few reviews I have read of the Jekyll I really liked the sound of it, the spec on the 3 isn't too bad and the dual travel rear shock set up if you can get it right sounds fanatastic.

I personally hate Scott so I wouldn't even be looking at that but that's just me!

What sort of price are you looking at for each bike?

Thanks for all your replies so far. I have read some reviews on the bikes but was looking for others thoughts and if they have owned any of the bikes which might give the pro's and con's for each.
The price of each bike so far are as follows

Scott £2149, Jekyll £2399.95 and the Zesty £2899 all for size large.

Are you not even going to consider the Specialized Enduro?

I only ask because I own one and love it. 160mm of travel and it does everything... I can power up hills, thrash down them, jump, drop and have even done a few uplift days.

The quality of the product and aftersale service is second to none with Specialized. Mind, I haven't had any reason to get in touch with them yet!

  • I have a Scott Genius MC 30 2008 and I love it. Being able to remotely alter the rear shock into 3 different modes is great. Can't comment on the other 2 bikes but as usual the bet wy, if possible, is to give them all a try.

There are no conditions, but if you post links to the actual bikes you are looking at, people can advise you on differences in spec etc.
As you can see from the massive response, Paulskibum may be right.

I'm sorry you seem very upset? If this post upsets you so much why do you respond? All I'm asking is for people's feedback on the models I've mentioned if they have owned them and there comments, which you have done neither so why waste your time responding?
I would like to thank those that have given true comments so far I appreciate what you say.

    Cooldad doesn't seem so cool...
Kernow, defo have a look round a bit more. The Enduro is a sweet bike.
You can go far wrong with any of your suggestions. Don't write off an Orange Alpine 160 or similar offerings travel-wise from Giant or Trek.
As has already been mentioned on here, try and get on a couple of them. See what you like.
If you can't do that then go for the Specialized!

I've got a 2011 Enduro Comp. Picked it up in March for £1800 because the 2012 stuff had recently come out.
The new Enduro Comp has Fox 32 forks up front but arguably is the same everywhere else.
I love the SRAM drivetrain, always had Shimano in the past but SRAM is great, smooth gear changing. The Avid brakes are really sharp. Great tyres, not a single puncture in 6 months!
I'd would really have loved the next model up but it was out of my price range.

Specialized provide a lifetime warranty on their frames and also have a crash replacement service should you wrap it round a tree.

I don't think you've mentioned the type of riding you're planning on using the bike for. That generally helps when asking for recomendations.
If it's trail centre stuff then I wouldn't recomend the Enduro.

Sounds like an enduro is way too much bike for the OP, and the enduro owner failed to mention that new sram stuff falls apart after 5 minutes and avid brakes are also pretty poor reliability wise.

Not ridden one, but the Norco Sight has had great reviews, on paper it looks spot on.

Thanks for the info I will check out the enduro and see if I can find a 2012 large as they should be reduced hopefully.

Get the zesty 514 - amazing bike.

Currently 2499 at Rutland cycles (where I bought mine from).

Climes like a mountain goat, nice and light (for a full sus). Proper carbon frame inc rear, decent formula brakes.

The geometry gives great confidence when pushing on downhill too, minimal pedal bob and the lockouts on both front and rear make it great for short road stints too.

Couldn't be more happy with mine - plus everyone comments on how decent looking it is in cool gloss black and green.

I will be using the bike for all sorts of riding, cross country, woodland tracks which have lots of rooted areas up and down with steep downhill parts a local quarry with drop offs and jumps and trails.
I do like the Zesty 514 for weight and carbon frame etc, I like the Scott for carbon frame (weight) and able to lock both front and back suspension at different travel, like the Cannondale from reviews and the way the rear suspension works would like a Jekyll 1 but to pricey for me!

How do you figure that without any comment as to the type of riding he intends to do?

I agree with the comments about the SRAM stuff though. I have a 2010 enduro comp and I swapped everything to Shimano XT. With mine I feel like it's too much bike for the riding I do and if I could go back to when I bought it I'd go for the stumpy instead. Now though I really want a transition bandit, never tried one so that's just based on reviews and stuff. The enduro is good through, I just dont use it to its potential.

  • Had my Zesty 514 for 2 yrs and highly recommend it i also have a Giant Trance X1 which is as good in every way my point is for the price range your spoiled for choice.

Basically any bike in this price range are going to be pretty much as good as each other in slightly different ways but all will perform really well and for the riding you do anything from 120mm - 140mm is spot on, what you need to do is pick the one that fits you best even better if you can test ride them all which is difficult.

Looks wise i don't think the Zesty can be beaten but that's just personal opinion but the look of the bike is important when ya spending big bucks or is that just me

There was nothing wrong with your question, but the more info you give, the more useful comments you will get back.
Very few people will have ridden all of those bikes, let alone owned them, but by posting links, so people can see relative spec and prices, and knowing what type of riding you do, allows them to at least comment on the spec, any potential shortcomings and suggest alternatives that you may not have considered.
So far what you really have, apart from benpinnick and njee, are people saying I have an xxx and it's awesome. Which makes sense because people rarely say I have an xxx and it's rubbish.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the silly off topic remarks - no one here is really real, being the internet.
