Journalists who name drop fancy schools as if we’re all supposed to know. For about a week I thought Sunak lived in the outskirts of Winchester and I wondered what the hell that mattered - is the town really that posh? “Sunak went to Winchester” wtf

I take it you only work with people who went to Eton or Harrow? Even I've heard of Winchester.

And, yes, Winchester is pretty posh.

Probably less posh, but bloody expensive nonetheless.

As my former boss said to me

"if you want to run a company, go to Winchester. If you want to run the country, go to Eton."

I always find the question "Where did you go to school?" to be one of the most ridiculous. Also never heard of Winchester College.

Used to love playing football against them for my school, they were hopeless. Cricket on the other hand they always thrashed us.

In Glesca that question "what school did you go to?" has a different context. I.e. are you a left footer or not?

The last time I was asked what school I went to, it was a test to determine whether or not I should be punched in the face by the slightly older and larger child who was asking.

My school was used in the filming of the Beiderbecke tapes. It’s now the site of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise building.

So it’s not a 1960’s Secondary Modern then.

Yeah, but did you play rugby against the Eton boys?

I am not sure. You have no chance.

This is what our leaders think is a killer put down.

"Did you go to school?" Is asking, within some circles, whether you went to Eton.

I thought The Beiderbecke Tapes was filmed up north? HM Customs and Excise is HQ'd in London (just behind Southbank).

It was filmed in Leeds and the surrounding area. My school Moor Grange was on the ring road and following it’s closure and demolition, according to Wikipedia is home to a Custom and Excise building.

Using the Americanism 'passing' for 'death'. Be sad at Bernard Cribbins' death: say it like it is, he's dead. He's not passed anywhere.

    1. 'E's passed on!
Pass on or pass away has apparently been used in the sense 'die' since about 1375; Lay Folks Mass Book (MS. B) 112: “God lord graunt .. rest and pese Þat lastis ay to christen soules passed away.” It implies a life beyond this one.
    2. This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be!
    3. 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker!
    4. 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace!
    5. If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies!
    6. 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory!
    7. 'E's off the twig!
    8. 'E's kicked the bucket,
    9. 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil,
    10. run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!!

There's a weird aversion to saying someone has died. Whenever I say it people seem to look at me like I'm being overly blunt and insensitive. Similar with people who try to avoid saying they or someone else has cancer.

    The Americans are very prudish.

The same people are avoidant of the word toilet, and would prefer if you asked where you can take a nap (restroom) or bathe (bathroom).

It's a funny one. After my dad died earlier this year, I found myself using 'passed on' when talking to some people - mainly those less familiar. I guess it's wanting to avoid making people feel awkward and having to trot out the standard phrases.

    Toilet is a ghastly word.

    Just say bathroom.
