Gran Canaria - Any pointers for accomodation

I fancy a week in Gran Canaria, maybe early December.

I want to avoid the extra costs of using one of the specialist cycling companies (even though they seem to get very good feedback) and am planning on just riding around for a week, seeking out the climbs (shouldn't be too difficult from what i've read).

However, I face a problem. Despite reading (what feels like) every thread about GC, I am having trouble finding accomodation that comes recommended by anyone. I don't fancy renting an apartment on a complex, so I'm looking for a hotel (that don't mind my bike sleeping with me) or a villa type thingy.

Can anyone give me some pointers please?

  • Thank you.

Although it is a source of many reviews, I'm looking for recommendations by those who have cycled there.
  • Hi
Tenerife would be much better for riding. There are some fantastic climbs and the scenery is much nicer than Gran Canaria.
If you are interested I can advise you on some incredible routes / climbs etc.

  • GC or Tenerife, I don't mind.

It's all about finding somewhere to stay. I might have to bite the bullet and go on an organised jobbie.

Maybe try posting in the correct forum then.

  • When searching, there are many threads in this forum, Tour & Expedition and Sportives/Audaxes/Training rides so it is a case of picking one or posting on more than one.

    So I picked....this one.

I'd suggest posting in Tour & Expedition instead. It is good forum etiquette to post in the correct sub-forum. I think it's one of the top 3 ways of how to not get flamed on the internet.

He needs to MTFU and face the miserable British winter like the rest of us. Or buy a turbo.

Nah, I don't go out in the rain.
  • I disagree about Tenerife being better.
My parents used to have a place in GC and I've been there a bunch of times (and Tenerife too)
Tenerife seems to be just one huge mountain with a couple of ways up where as GC has rolling coastal roads as well as long climbs
I have stayed in a place called taurito which is near puerto mogan. Puerto mogan is really nice and pretty quiet and not your usual high rise hotel resort. Argueneguine is popular too.
A hotel I can recommend is called Cala blanca in puerto taurito. But if I was going again my first choice would be a self catering apartment in puerto mogan (owners direct etc would be a good starting point for this)
I would avoid places like maspalomas and Puerto Rico as they tend to be busy and very built up (even in deep winter they are busy with German and Scandinavian tourists)
If you want more advice on routes etc then I'd be happy to help.

You see, not everyone on an Internet forum acts like a tool!

anothe rvote for Taurito/Puerto Mogan area. They are on the beach and from there you can ride to the highest point of the island (2100m from sea level :D) without any major roads or dodgy bits. Its about 40km of amazing climbing and billiard table smooth tarmac from Taurito to the top (except for about 1km about 75% of the way up), with various options for detours along the way and a choice of a few cafes and restaurants as well as the occasional fresh fruit stall, that will also offer you freshly made smoothies as you head up and down :D You can amuse yourself for a week easily and if you need an easy day then head around the coast on the flat roads for a while.

Heaven - see you there after Xmas....
