My biggest ride yet

Thankfully the weather for Saturday looks nice, so I'm off to try to do a long ride, I've planned a route from heathrow down the A4 to reading to Wokingham to Bracknell, ascot and back home all in all about 60 miles.
Up until now the longest I've done is 8.5 miles and I'm looking at an average of about 17 mph which I'm comfortable with, and I'm taking a banana a couple of gels and some high 5 energy drinks and possibly a few jelly babies.
Can anybody give me any advice on what I should take or do to hopefully make me finish.
Ps. Pump and patches are coming with me to.

mmm having re-read your post - that you currently do 8.5milers at the moment it might be worth considering your speed and possibly the length of your route and build up a little more before you dive in to tackle a route of 60miles - that is a significant jump. Whatever you do take your time warming up - don't go off too hard, this should help you attain a decent milage. Good preparation is essential for a successful long ride, load up on carbs the evening before, make sure you are well hydrated and get a good night's sleep. Make sure you get a good breakfast down you an hour or 2 before you set off, this gets the maximum amount of fuel into your system to burn while you are on the go. Porridge is always a good one but go easy on the Golden syrup to avoid blood sugar spikes, if you are too excited to eat - a breakfast smoothie always gives me a long term boost and has seen me through many long bike rides, chuck a glass of milk, one or two bananas, a dessertspoonful of porridge oats and a decent squidge of runny honey and maybe even a yoghurt in a blender, blitz till smooth and drink steadily. Hope that helps ??0

So your longest ride is 8.5 miles and you're off to ride 60 miles at the weekend? You might just make it, but if you average 17mph on you 8.5 mile ride then don't expect to be anywhere near that on a 60 miles ride.More problems but still living....0

You ought to gradually increase the mileage. Make your next ride 15, then 20, then 30, then 45 before trying to do 60. Otherwise you may suffer.CAPTAIN BUCKFAST'S CYCLING TIPS - GUARANTEED TO WORK! 1 OUT OF 10 RACING CYCLISTS AGREE!0

As per herbsman above, not sure its wise to go from 8.5mls to60 mls in a one go. Good luck anyway and enjoy the ride whatever you end up doing.2010 Trek Madonne 4.7

This must be trolling .. 8.5 mile to 60 mile jump .. taking pump and patches .. are you going to carry a bucket of water to find the hole?
If you're not trolling, leave some of the food out of your pockets and put a tube in its place. And if 17.5 is your average for 8.5miles, you'll probably do 60 at about 15mph, and that's if you don't bonk 30 miles from home. A perceived effort at a level where you can talk easily while riding will see you round. If you've got much left you can then TT the last 10 miles. All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

May be the OP meant to post in Road Beginners rather than training :?:0 -
Plan a 30 mile loop and if you are feeling strong then do it twice.0

I wouldn't leap from 8.5 to 60. You're going to find it hard and it may even put you off riding. You could however take it at a really steady pace if you have all day.0

Good job, glad you made it through. Make sure to rest well, replenish your body with fluids and nutrients so you can recover.0

Sounds like you're fitter than your previous 8.5 miles longest ride suggested. Wonder how you'll be feeling tomorrow though!More problems but still living....0

If you had never been over 8.5miles then do 54m averaging 17mph then you should take up racing. Think we just found the next Tom Boonen0
