^^ This. I won't come to your sprawling metropolis and get in your way when you are, invariably, in a hurry if you don't come to my beautiful countryside and hurry about when I am, invariably, trying to relax.

It's not nonsense, go into Harrods, you will soon find the 6 pack of Bananas for £3, and the handbags with no prices on.

    And?

Next you'll be telling me that for the price of a 1 bed flat in Fulham I can buy a farm in Wales, do people not get it something is worth what somebody will pay and the principle of supply/demand? We know its expensive, we know why its expensive, do you honestly think that if a shopkeeper in Worksop thought he could sell £1000 handbags to the locals and make £300 on every one he wouldn't be doing it?

London has a lot of very wealthy individuals, (of which I'm not one) Harrods is probably the most famous shop in the world, in one of the most prestigious areas of any city the world over, does it REALLY surprise you that things cost a little bit more than they do in your local Morrisons?

Actually you'll find that there are significantly more than a million regular commuters, plus a few hundred thousand tourists and other visitors at any given time. So - ten million, give or take.

That is far from London specific but it is worthy of comment.
What does it mean? If you have to ask then you can't afford it, or we are ashamed of how much we are going to rip you off by. Either way, not nice.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Harrods has nothing to do with London, as far as I am concerned. London just happens to be the place some rich, greedy old fella decided he wanted to set up his superficial, capitalist empire.

Not nice? If it was an issue to their target market, they would put price taks on. If you dont like it, buy your next £x,000 handbag somewhere else. It doesn't interest me.

-I don't expect anyone to love the place, but if you can't think of anything more interesting to do in London as a tourist than nose round Harrods, there is something wrong with you.

In the interests of accuracy(fact-checking post)

Harrods was founded by a 25-year-old in 1824, moving to the current site in 1851 (as a very small operation), and is now owned by the Qatar Investmnent authority. It was not "set up by" al-Fayed, whom I expect you are referring to despite not having owned Harrod's for a few years.

The number of illegal immigrants probably takes it a shade over the 10 million.

    Wikipedia:
In March 2011, London had an official population of 8,174,100, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union,[23][24] and accounting for 12.5% of the UK population.[25] The Greater London Urban Area is the second-largest in the EU with a population of 8,278,251,[26] while the London metropolitan area is the largest in the EU with an estimated total population of between 12 million[27] and 14 million.[28]

Depends on how you define the area - many large cities in China contain huge amounts of agricultural land and nearby villages, towns, minor cities in their official boundaries bumping up the quoted population numbers.

    No worries, pal. *thumbsup

Will, I'm massively under the weather but might head to Regent's Park after work for a few steady laps. If I see a Manc Wheeler, I'll assume it's you and say hello. But you have to promise not to drop me; it seems you're younger and fitter than I am!

London for me will always remain a missed opportunity - I grew up in Glasgow and left there 20 years ago and have lived in semi-rural areas ever since. I do regret not having moved to London for 2 reasons - a. it would have fast tracked my career and b. music, pubs, nightlife, cafe, restaurants all of that..not to mention the burdz.
I don't spend much time on thisnow as I know that I would have moved back out of it eventually but I do think I would have enjoyed it, just never managed to get everything in line at the right time. I love the buzz and the choice of restaurants and all the villages, from Stokie to Balham and had many friends move there over the years, though the majority of them all moved back to Central Scotland eventually.

@Willhub - embrace it and go meet some people - just stay out the public lavs, though a young lad like you could no doubt earn the price of a good pair of Zipps; in a couple of nights :D .

Sorry, bit late to this... Harrods is a ridiculous place to buy bananas, it's like being shocked that strawberries and cream at Wimbledon cost a fiver for a punnet of 6 or whatever... I can buy a massive bowl of about 20 bananas at my local greengrocer market in London for a quid...

We went to the Wellcome Collection, then went to Oxford Street phone shopping, then it was suddenly about 4pm, so went to Wagamama, I need to plan better, I'll be back to London in a few weeks maybe.

Apart from the train delayed by 1 hour got back fine :)

Had to take my massive backpack to the station and ride back and then get my other backpack, saved me using the tube tho, and the toilets are nice, spacious and clean at Kings Cross so I managed to get changed there too.

  • Yeah I hate it too at times. It has its moments.

I miss the cycling of when I lived in S Wales and Yorkshire. It's doable here but it's also a chore, really. Difficult to get a short ride in. From here in zone 2 it's the same old routes funnelling through Crystal Palace to get to some quieter lanes. Traffic and buses, gah. Crap really.

The pubs are good though, and the food!

I live in Crystal Palace ........ well Sydenham Hill. Quick fly through the back of Elmers End and you're in the North Downs and then on to the Green Sand Hills of Surrey and Kent. My personal ride takes me past Churchill's house, Darwin's house, Hever Castle, Chiddingstone Castle and then the Hurricane and Spitfire at Biggin Hill.

It is riding past all though those stunning country pubs which is the tough thing.

Yeah SE London is relatively 'thin' so it's pretty quick and easy to get out to the countryside of Kent...I live in brockley which is zone 2 and I can be out in Kent within about 40 mins on the bike....
