Turbo trainer advice

Hello,
Hoping for a little advice (I have searched through this forum but can't find the tips I'm looking for):
I have recently been given a wheel mounted turbo trainer, I own one road bike that I use for the occasional social outing, but mostly for my daily commute to work. I ride XC & DH most of the time and don't really want to spend lots on my roadie.
- So, I want to use the turbo over the winter a few nights a week: is there anyway to protect the tyre? (gaffer tape on the rollers maybe?) I have looked at buying a turbo tyre however I'm not too keen on swapping tyres over every time I want to use the turbo.
Any tips/ advice would be very welcome.
Thank you,
Clint.

I wouldnt bother ... but a spare wheel with an old tyre is the way to go.
BUT
You have your commute for some actual road work.
SO
I dont think any turbo time will actually benefit your other interest with the MTB.0 -
Try this dual purpose tyre - I've used it for both turbo and road and it works for me.

Thanks for the advice... going to try that continental tyre for a bit.0
