    Have you seen the video with Guy Martin at the orange factory? They really seem to do things by hand. There is a great bit of footage where a bloke smacks the rear end of a misaligned frame with a hammer. He gets the alignment spot on with one whack!

    the five looks well mate!

    i own a five myself and like its been said before there like marmite, but i just dont get people who slate people for buying them and the bikes themselves because of the price and there looks and weight etc etc, the whole idea of there being more than one bike is so people have choice to get what they want, obviously (myself included) he got the orange as likes the looks of it, likes the way it way it rides, and feels at home on it, personally i could not care if its a tiny bit overweight (frame) its not as though were world champions and every gram counts, the bike was bought for the facts stated. i used to own a specilized stumpjumper and i 110% perfer the orange five to that bike hands down but i dont go around slating stumpjumpers because of it. im all up for positive / negative commets if you post a pic but some people go over the top, but all i can say is if you aint tried one,try one before slating it.

    Everyone knows that orange complies with the industry standard, ah crap it's abit out, let's tw@ it with a fook off hammer :lol:

    The five has its positives, as an all-rounder I can't see it, as a light weight gravity bike perhaps it makes sense. But it still costs a lot of money for what it is, and orange from the factory seem to charge silly money for things that should be standard, like the maxle Swing arm, why has the price risen now its standard kit? I rode a five a few years ago back to back with numerous others and it didn't click with me. IMO the ideal all rounder is not as heavy or simple as a five and nor should it be priced so high when the method of alignment is to just smack it with a hammer

    I like them. Looks wise I can understand the dislike but I quite like it. Weight wise - yeah they could be lighter but then so could I.

    I used to have a Patriot I bought second hand and I found it a great gravity bike, my mate had a 5 he rode rings round me on both up and down. I wouldnt buy a new one and probably wouldnt buy a second hand one either (I'd rather have a Heckler in the similar travel, tough, simple category) but I like them and celebrate anyone who is riding a bike whatever bike it may be.

    The five is by no means a 'heavy' bike - yeah it's not lightweight, but most of my 'xc' bikes have been pretty weighty, probably a fair bit more than this chap's five weighs. My current hardtail probably isn't below 30lbs, i can almost guarantee that, but it rides really well, which is the main thing. The fives may be simple, but that means there's less to go wrong, they ride relatively well and the geometry is spot on. They're a bit pricey too, but I'd have one, just probably not new.

    As someone else said, there's a difference between constructive criticism, some of you guys should back off. If he's happy with the bike, then that's all that matters. What happened to "it's how you ride, not what you ride"?

    I think it looks great, and I'm glad it's being enjoyed :) I'd still really like a five or an alpine.

    A simple bike can be a good all- rounder, but imo the Ideal all-round bike, contrary to what MBR tells us, is both lighter and has less of the potential hang ups single pivots have. I'm a huge fan of DW-link and VPP, they offer a great ride across all terrain and require little more maintenance than a single pivot.

    I disagree, 140mm isn't enough travel for an all-rounder, and most 160mm bikes will weigh more than a five. Depends what you class as an 'all rounder'. I'd want to be able to take it down a proper downhill track on an uplift day without having to change anything other than the tyres i used for the 30km XC ride from the previous day. I'm guessing that's not what some people mean... You could do it on a five (i know people that do), but it's hardly the 'ultimate all rounder'.

    Thing with most 160mm bikes, the weight is in the build, not the frame. Add a 36 and all the kit you get on a 160mm bike, and it will weigh the same as say a spicy, but have less travel.

    IMO if you want a british trail bike, you have a choice between a 5 or a whyte 146, and the whyte from experience would rings around the 5 in the right hands, its far lighter, better spec and looks far, far nicer. Heck sometimes I still wish I'd got my order on time and not got the HD, its that good.

    I like it, "IMO" it looks great. Never ridden one though so can't comment on the ride but....it looks like it will be great on the trails :D

    Does look heavy though, might have to get the grinder out and take off that extra leg sapping lb or so :lol:

    Nothing awkward about it, or your post, what so ever.

  • Have changed a few bits over the past week or two so i thought i'd update the thread.

    Firstly, got rid of the horrific minion on the front to be replaced with a Rubber Queen UST 2.4 BC (Utterly Immense) and got rid of the Crossmark on the rear and replaced that with a Mountain King 2 2.2 Protection BC.

    Second, bars have been cut down from 785 to 765 as i was hitting a few too many trees at Cannock ;)

    Thirdly, i have changed the saddle for my Charge Spoon.

    Here's a few photos of it now. Loving the way it rides. Is so easy to pedal for more cross-country ride yet loves to be pushed on the trails.

  • The orange isnt my cup of tea, but i certainly dont hate them. What i do like about this bike is that you really seem to love it! Considering you seem to do up a lot of bikes and sell em on, its nice you have found something you want to hold on to and use, and then use again! Kudos!

  • To cut a long story short, my brother brought a Five 2011 Pro in Black but doesn't get on with it, so it's now mine.

    Spec is similar to my White 5 but the new is the 2011 version with the tapered headtube and 30.9 seattube. (Reverb FTW)

    Difference's in Spec:

    Fox 36 Floats
    Rockshox Reverb
    Soon to be full set of Shimano SLX M675 Brakes
    10 Speed running E-Thirteen 34t Ring.

    I love the orange 5 and wouldn't swap for another bike. Especially the Ibis, looks like a giant pretzel on wheels!

  • The bike didnt feel right with 160 forks, so i picked up some 2011 Fox Float 32 140 RLC FIT for £300. Bargain i say!

    Have also added an offset bush at the swingarm end. Now feels top notch. Good climbing yet amazing downhill.

    Anyway heres a few photos of the new forks etc.

    Now weighing in 29.8lbs.
