Strong comments from F Moser

“Nibali is only a good rider, not a champion. It takes more than that to deserve this title,” he asserted. “He tries, he tries, but he lacks something.”

“He is blessed. In my day, the riders were stronger and were paid less,” he said. “People praise him for little, because there is little to be excited about.

Looking outside Italy, Moser said that he also considers it premature to regard Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins as a new star. “He won the yellow jersey as the Tour has been designed specifically for his characteristics,” he said, claiming that his team did much of the work to set him up in the mountains, and that the difference was made in the time trials. “I do not think would be able to do it again with a different parcours. The only real great, I think, is Contador.

Now Frankie, when you get a moment, I'd like to a have a quiet word about the 1984 Giro. At least Wiggins didn't need a helicopter and a cancelled mountain pass....

Never got over not winning the Tour, did Moser...

Most of us roll our eyes when the old 'uns like to turn to the favourite parlour game of criticising the current pros and conveniently forgetting that they themselves were fired up on juice at the time.

Has a point about Nib's though, definitely only in Iain's Second tier and looks destined to remain there.

It's not so much that. It's more that they forget that when they rode there were next to no Australians, Americans, Brits, Germans, Russians, Scandanavians, Colombians, Russians and other Eastern Europeans. Moser only had to race a couple of Frenchman and a few Belgians (even Spaniards were rare).

That's true. Globalisation of the sport expanded the talent pool dramatically, therefore reducing the victory % of the 'old school nation's'.

What Wiggins did this year was top champion racing. No doubt. True champions are built up over years though.

Only until the rapidly approaching end of the season.
Moser is no Hinault, is he?

Blood will out, no doubt! :P

Francesco should be quiet. He had a mountain stage of the Giro cancelled in 1984 where his poor climbing would have lost him pink and then he had a helicopter blow him to the TT win to steal the Giro 1984. He was a cheat.

Fair enough, but I am sure he hardly cheated to achieve all his other palmares:

    Grand Tours
    Tour de France
    2 stages (1975)
    Giro d'Italia
    General Classification (1984)
    Points Classification (1976, 1977, 1978, 1982)
    23 stages
    Stage Races
    Volta a Catalunya
    General classification (1978)
    Tirreno-Adriatico
    General classification (1980, 1981)
    Single-Day Races and Classics
    Road Race World Championships (1977)
Italian National Road Race Championship (1975, 1979, 1981)
    Milan – San Remo (1984)
    Paris-Tours (1974)
    Paris–Roubaix (1978, 1979, 1980)
    Gent–Wevelgem (1979)
    Giro di Lombardia (1975, 1978)
    La Flèche Wallonne (1977)

When I say cheat, I don't mean doping. He doesn't accuse Nibali or Wiggins of doping.

It would be silly to say he wasn't a heavyweight of the sport.

Don't think he was that concerned with the Tour. He only rode it once. Likewise with the Vuelta. He did ride the Giro a whopping 13 times though.

Could that be because of the way the Giro could be manipulated to his benefit?

More that for an Italian, the Giro would be worth more. It's hard to take that point of view.

Maybe the Giro was leaned to his capabilities, but not every year for 15 years. He would have won a lot more than 15 if that was the case.

FYI, Contador has won 7 Grand Tours, only Anquetil, Hinault, Merckx, Gimondi and Indurain above him. He still only 29 and is riding an era where the talent pool has never been stronger and fairer.

So yeah, certified great, true champion, super heavyweight.

South Londoner David J Akam was a Moser domestique in the mid-80's - is that who's meant?

He was the Ian Stannard of his day...

Do what? Sometimes I think people forget how good his palmares are and that he still has a boatload more years to add to it.

FF, your love for AC seems limitless - but wouldnt it be, well, cleaner, to just have a thread called "Homage to Bertie" or "J'adore Contador" and post all your photos there? Isnt it difficult to keep track of which ones you've already posted?

I think I can guess your answer to this, and if it wasnt for those pesky WADA and CAS organisations...but strictly speaking he has 5 GTs against his name, non?
