So it's nearly all over.

2012 was my first full season watching cycling and I've loved it from start to finish.

Highlight for me was Boonen handing the Sky team there ar5es at Paris- Roubaix, closely followed it has to be said with Sagan's Tour debut, we knew it was going to be special and he didn't disappoint.

The Turkey of the year is jointly awarded to Frandy. They must be close to keeping the award now....

I think the moment I most enjoyed was Wiggo's sprint victory in Romandie. I don't know that any other result throughout the season has been more unexpected than that.
  • Turkey has to go to the Bulgarian twat that won Tour of Turkey, then went pos... again!
  • Definitely Boonen's P-R for race of the year. Renshaw's season at Rabo as Turkey.

This might not be wholly popular (and certainly wasn't in the Daily Wail) but highlight for me was Vos the Boss this year with the Olympic RR gold, in London, in the rain.

Turkey - Pat or the Twitter whining by the Sky WAGs.

Speaking of Turkey... The scenery in that race beated the french alps by some distance and tv-prodcution was brilliant. Shame only 5 people showed up watching it.

Rider: Bradley Wiggins. Won everything he tried to.
Race: LBL was pretty good I remember
Moment: Boonen winning in Roubaix to make himself the greatest cobbles rider in history
Turkey: Thor Hushovd. 2.5 million euros!

With Ron B on that -
Rider: Vos winning the womens olympic road race which was a completely absorbing race
Race: Mens worlds, real pride at the GB effort, lots of intrigue through the whole race and a top result for most of us.
Moment: Contadors attack in the vuelta, brilliant bit of Riis tactics which worked this time.
Turkey: Radio Shack and Andy and Franks comedy season.

Bit harsh on Thor. Been ill apparently.

  • In spite of all the great things that happened for British cycling this year, my favourite race moment was probably Rabotini's stage win at the Giro - I thought that was an epic afternoon's racing. As for a turkey...hmm...I'll need to have a think.

Rider: Wiggins. Couldn't really ask for any more
Race: Roubaix and THAT ride by Tommeke
Moment: Dan Martin's upcoming triumph in Lombardy
Turkey: Uran selling the Olympics to Vino + Lesley Garrett's warbling

  • Right, having properly read the OP now
Rider - must be Wiggins, Race - The Tour - not the best racing maybe, but such significance for the sport in this country, Moment - Rabotini's Giro stage, Turkey - Men's Olympic RR was a whole world of underwhelming.

    Rider: Wiggins
Race: Women's Olympic road race was great fun from start to finish, pretty epic in all ways
Moment: Thibaut Pinot's stage victory in the Tour, and Marc Madiot screaming encouragement was the best I thought, heroic.
Turkey: maybe GB's Mens olympic race, if only being an utter anticlimax after much hype. Great day though.

Wiggins is easly man of the season. P-N, Romie, Dalph then the Tour. then to top if off with a TT gold. Epic season. His sprint win was quality especially as it wasn't intentional either. String them out to be save.... have a quick look around then think "yea lets give it a wee bit more". he had no challangers in the tour but he certainy made the after race interviews entertaining.

Was always a fan of Wiggins the track cyclist then his 4th place came out of no where. When he did sign for Sky ad they sad they will go to win the tour. I wrote it off but gave them kudos for trying. Didnt want to write it off, but really didnt beleive it would happen. Hats off. Stories like this need to be told to kids, the ups downs then ups again.
  • Rider: Marianne Vos. Cyclo-cross World Champion, Women's World Cup, Ronde van Drenthe, Trofeo Alfredo Binda, GP de Plouay, Giro d'Italia Femminile, Olympic Road race, Road Race World Champion. What esle is there to win?

Race: Men's World Road Race Championships. Last lap was great, pushing and shoving on the final desent, the Belgian team arriving from nowhere at the front of the race at the bottom of the Cauberg, Gilbert's attack, the chase, attack and counter attack from EBH and Valverde. And the first 6 hours was pretty good as well!

Moment: Tour de France Stage 7 La Planche des Belles Filles. Just over a week to go it looked like I wouldn't make it to this stage for one reason and another, so to get there and see the stage was fantastic! And then riding back down the descent to find out that Froome had won the stage and Wiggins taken the race lead. :D

Turkey: Hushovd. Pains me to say it as he is one of my fav riders. But it has been a disaster of a year for him. Especially compared to last year. Hope he wins something big in 2013!
  • Rider - Wiggo
Race - as celestecharlie says: Tour because of significance for this country
Moment - The 1st Tour weekend I went to, Froome stage win & polka, Wiggo into yellow, seeing them ride in them then Wiggo flying past me with about 8km to go in 1st TT, he was going so quick then & was clearly massively gaining on others that he was solidifying his grip on yellow. Amazing trip (and I even got a load of TdF tat!)
Turkey - me! Specifically my single bike ride this year, up the Stelvio. I took hours to get up there, had to stop ridiculously frequently near top. I did at least make it, and without pushing (which was my stubborn aim!). Oh, a proper rider? Lance for the damage his amazing PR continues to do to the sport. Oh, one still riding? Franck. Oh, STILL riding? Andy.
  • Slightly random, but one of my favourite moments of the year was Iljo Keisse winning that stage in the Tour of Turkey. One of those very rare moments when a bullsh*t race turns into the purest drama.
  • Rider: Wiggo -> Won everything.

Race: Le Tour -> Sky and the Brits smashed it to pieces (Sagan was good too)

Moment: Toss up between Wiggo punching the air after winning the second tour TT and the attack which turned out to be Contador's Vuelta winning move.

Turkey: Mens Olympic RR -> wouldn't have minded so much if Vino hadn't won.

  • for me the best stage win was Wiggins in the TT at Paris-Nice. This was the moment I knew he would win the TDF. He was a machine up the hill and showed he could keep a high pace for a long time. I think this may have also been the race early in the Season that Porte rode up a steep hill for about 2km out of the saddle and showed he was going to be great support.

My favourite cyclist for the year was Anna Mears and on the road I think it would be Voekler. He was my highlight at the TDF, it was a dour race but his win in the KOM was brilliant, he decided to not wear a radio and just did it old school by beating the riders next to him.

Funniest moment of the year was being able to buy a Europcar KOM jersey from China for $20US the day he won, before they were availiable through the right channels.

Best effort for me as a team was GreenEDGE, they had a great first year and have a good base to build on

Finish of the year was the 3/10000sec win in the Tour of Turkey

Tour of the year was the Vuelta, despite the past of the feature cyclists it was a brilliant race and made up for a dour TDF. The Giro was also a great race.

Crash of the year was the stack in the Womens RR at the world titles, where were they looking? how do you plough into a crash at slow speed 6 rows in front of you?

Biggest dissappointment of the year was the lack of competition for Wiggins at the TDF, he was a very deserving winner but it would have been nice if Evans had been within a minute to add some spice.

Retirement of the year- Farewell and thanks for the memories Robbie McEwan

    Ha :P.

Looking back at Roubaix, as I like to do.

After Boonen dropped Terpstra, it took sky 6km just to get Terpstra back!

    Rider: Wiggo

    Race:
GT - Tour - British winner, Wiggo smashing the TTs, Froome's win on Stage 7, seeing the yellow jersey doing lead outs especially the run in to the Champs - and personally me being there for so many of the stages
One-day: Boonen's masterclass at P-R, plus a big shout for last Sun's Worlds

Turkey: Goss - his team put him in a great position so many times, and he didnt finish it off bar once

My own additional category: Shades of what could have been: Cancellara winning Strade Bianchi. We missed out on what could have been some great battles between him and Boonen in the Classics
