It simply never fails to amaze me how often I hear two or more cyclists when Im out on clubs rides talking about having to listen to whinging wives harping on about club rides, bikes and all that. My missus does the old roll eyes if I even mention my bike, so I can kind of sympathise with the guys talking about the whinging they have to listen to. Anybody here know what Im talking about and has to observe their wife giving off about all things bikes too ?

Discuss.

  • I get the opposite - gentle encouragement to keep going.

Perhaps this is due to being out and back before they get out of bed !
All the gear, but no idea...

My other half is pretty good (Very good to be honest)

I have two mates that have had nippers in the last two years and dont ride at all now ...Maybe every 3 months and they still get bitched at even then if we are out for the day.

They were both best men at my wedding and due to other halfs both left by 8:30pm on the Wedding day.

If by anychance they are reading this ..... GROW A PAIR OF BALLS !??!!? ;O)

My wife is great when it comes to bikes.. She loves reading, so when both kids are in bed, around 7ish its a perfect time for me to get out on the bike, I ride 4-5 times in the week, and sunday morning.

My mates always comment, "you never spend time with each other" and other comments, but even though i ride a lot, we still seem to spend a lot of time together and the kids. It fits in perfectly, and my missus is fine with it.

The only thing my wife hates is me buying bikes, could have bought a serious car for the same money i have spent in the last 2 years.. or got her windows done .lol! :D

i must be the luckiest bugger on here, i met my missus in a bike club 17 years ago, she's better on a bike than me in EVERY way, she owns about 10 grand's worth of bikes and works in a bike shop, that's not to say that she washes any of her bloody bikes though, apparently that's my job.
  • I can fully understand a wife whose husband is at work 5 days a week and on the two days you have as a family together, has to accept that the husband wants to clear off for even more time.

This may not apply to the OP and not for me as I am self-employed but I can certainly understand them.

No issues just encouragement, i wear the skirt in our house and look after the children full time so i get told to get out and do what i want. The wife comes home early at the moment so i can get out on the bike before it gets dark, i'll get 4hrs and a 2hr ride at the weekend if the weathers fine.
If i go up the pub with my mates i'll get moaned at if i come home too early, my mates get moaned at for going up the pub in the first place.

The answer - marry the right woman! I waited until I was 40 and enjoyed life first, then I found a woman that wanted me to enjoy life while she enjoyed developing her career.

It's generally just an excuse by the man to explain why they're not as good as they could be it's all "the wife's" fault that they don't have the time to train how they want to and that's why the fat bloke on the hybrid is overtaking them on the hill. When the reality is of course they either don't want to spend the effort training, or want to spend the time with the family, or working, or on the piss or whatever.

I've never really understood it though, why boast that you let someone else control your life?

My wife gave me £400 of vouchers from my lbs for my birthday and we've bought an apartment in the Pyrenees this year, so I'm pretty happy. I know what you mean though, there are guys in the club who will try and extract every last mile from the Sunday run as they know it's the only opportunity they get to ride!

It is difficult to get a balance. My missus is pretty long suffering and has put up with my running about 1500 miles per year and racing at least every other weekend for a long time. Have given that up now and found this new hobby fairly recently. With cycling its something she can share at a level that she is comfortable with. She uses my hybrid, comes out with me in the country sometimes, has been to sportives in nice areas, and we did a lot of cycling on holiday in the new forest. She is a keen photographer so uses the time to indulge her passion and feels she is getting a bit fitter at the same time. It's been quite liberating for us really

My missus (the 2nd one) does nothing but encourage my hobby. It does depend on the woman though I reckon. My 1st missus was a right torn faced whoor who would moan at anything I did, hence why she is my ex!!! A bit of give and take with the right person then its not a problem. As for the two fellas who left the wedding at 8:30pm, FFS lads get your wimmin telt!!!!!!!

My wife gets upset sometimes, but I go out plenty about 2-3 times a week. We have got a 3 year old and another one on the way so I also like to spend time with them as it is so precious right now. I also like spending time with my wife on our own.

So I am happy, sometimes I miss going out more but I know if I did I would miss my daughter and wife more so its all a happy medium :)

There is always a bit of moaning when I go for a Sunday ride though :D

My misses is fine with my cycling. She encourages me to take advantage of the C2W scheme and buy the stuff I want/need. She even told me to take a chance on a 2nd hand TT bike on ebay. She especially likes helping me choose clothing! As for riding time I'm realistic, I commute the 18 miles to work so I get plenty of time in the saddle daily so it's just racing and club rides that cut into my free time. We always make sure at least one day off a week we do something together that isn't cycling. Another plus for me is that I work shifts so I'm often available at times when others are not.

People need to consider marrying people who they have something in common with.

My wife-to-be spends as much time playing roller derby as I do cycling; neither of us would even dream of moaning at the other for spending time doing things we enjoy in life

  • I'm one of the fortunate ones, I've got a great wife bought me sidi cycling shoes and a kit at christmas, went to Tuscany in may for 5 days, new bike for my birthday (a few months before) then on my actual birthday presented me with a weekend break in Paris to see the end of the tour, she's joined the club as a non riding member (due to health) but comes along to watch the racing and joins in at the local tea room (club house) after the rides. I kid you not :D:D

    Like I'm bothered.

Perhaps that's why we're still together 31years on.

People need to get their lives in perspective.

I have a gorgeous wife and great kids and my docs never thought I would make it past 50, keeping fit ensures that I continue to keep my health and we are all grateful for that.

I make sure that I make time to take my wife out and not just when it is raining , it doesn't have to be anywhere expensive just time together, even going for a walk (great as a recovery walk  )

Life is a partnership not just one sided!
  • My mrs is really quite chilled and we both are easy going when it comes to hobbies. We have the attitude of, if you enjoy it then do it. Obviously we dont take the mick but we have a good understanding. That being said, i encourage her to go out so i can have time to myself and recover from the ear ache, she doesnt stop talking :lol

    Precisely.

Brownie points system. Do your bit for wife, home and family, and she'll be glad to let you go out and play.

Having a winter bike with good lights helps - I often ride at night while she's glued to trash TV, so we're both happy.

yep, its all about give and take, my wife has choir, book club, swimming and a bit of running and cycling. I have cycling and a bit of running and swimming.

Actually currently my daughter is the one who moans the most when I go out as she likes us (the family) to hang around together even if we are not doing much.
  • My wife just hates me, doesn't care what I do. Still together after 25 years though. And as she says "I can't hear you moan when you are 20 miles away" plus it allows here to have every light in the house on and heating full blast in Summer.
  • I have a family and cherish spending time with them. That is why I ride first thing in a morning on weekends.
  • Morning rides for me, usually back before she's up (often up at 5.30am to make this happen, the roads are empty and I love the solitude - this is my time). That of course is harder during the autumn / winter but dark / wet / cold rides count double. I also ride to work when I can (avg twice a week) which is a 19 mile each way affair if I go as the crow flies, often though I go the long way home to get 30 miles or so under my belt, any more and dinner ends up in the dog. Weekend's are few and very far between as we have a 6mth old boy and we are always out doing stuff.
So, it's fair to say I get what I want out of cycling (albeit I'd like to do more longer w/e rides) and I explain to Mrs H that this is good for me, keeps me fit and she does agree BUT it's the spending money on gear thing she hates. Can't understand why I would want (insert required number of bikes) and why they need to be fettled all the time.
