No, I asked watch enthusiasts what they would buy with £8k

In the context of this thread I'm not very interested in anything else (even bikes)

Sorry to take the thread slightly off track but can any of the watch buffs that have posted suggest a decent place to sell a watch.

I have a Breitling that I would like to part with but not really sure where to go to make sure I get a decent price for it.
Try watchfinder.co.uk. I've used them before - got the price I wanted, pretty much what I paid for it 5 years before :) and service was good. They cover Breitlings (they only do certain brands, i.e. expensive Swiss ones). Just bear in mind it's 15% commission if you go for a commission sale - you can choose between using them as the agent to sell to a buyer and you pay them their cut, or outright sale to them and they sell it on.

I'm sure my comments will be skimmed over given the tone of this discussion, but anyway.

I love watches but for me the cheaper the better. I'm not yet 50 but I am a lawyer and I wear a £30 Swatch. On a weekend I wear a £20 Timex and I think they're both lovely. When I'm on my bike I wear a big rubber/plastic sports watch that was £7 off Ebay.

For me the joy is in the simplicity and lack of pretension (not being rude about expensive watches!) that these things have.

So, I'd spend the £8k on something that will give me some good memories like a holiday or some sort of adventure/expedition.

likewise occupation, likewise watch. I have a £19.99 Sekonda it currently tells me the date is the 1st

A colleague bought a TAG Heuer Grand carrerra 2 weeks ago, £5k apparently. He gets paid considerably more than I do...

Watches are a thing of engineering beauty - I think of them in much the same way as an expensive bike (other than they are less useful but far better at holding their value)

Sure a decathlon bike gets you from the same A to B point as a maclaren venge but I know which one will make most people smile more. I don't believe it is about being flash (most people don't even know the value of a number of brands) it is more about knowing you have a quality piece of engineering on your wrist, impractical - yes, worth it - totally (if you can reasonably afford it).

daytona's peaked in price around the time Beckham was photographed wearing one. Thats all so 2003 now.

    but heres my advice

if you really want a daytona and you have the funds to buy it, then buy it.
A rolex will eventually turn into an investment , i bought a sub non date for £1200 in 2000 , its now worth £3500, and THAT is a true story guys

If I had 8k for a watch it still wouldn't be enough for what I'd like!

but I'd be straight off to the IWC boutique in Zürich or Schaffhausen for this:

both of which are something different from my everyday watch:

    Those Daytonas are over-priced imo.
Am I the only person who finds this quite hilarious in the context of this thread?

They used to be approx £3900 with the Zenith 'ElPrimero' movt. and everyone famous had one it seems so there was a cache with the watch esp. in placeds like Italy hence the waiting list/price premium. Now they are £8k with the Rolex movt. which isn't any better and the watch is still stainless steel. Rolex costs haven't gone up that much. I just don't like them. There are better Chrono watches for that money or less

The Zenith is definitely a nice timepiece. Strangely, the Tag outlet at Bicester also sells Zenith watches, not sure if the prices/models are good.

Not strange. They merged a while ago into a LVMH owned company.

    They're essentially the same now.

The true Daytona should ony be stainless steel. These used to be rare to get a hold of, but the queues are a thing of the past. Phoning around will secure you one.

Still queues at all the Rolex AD's I've contacted (well over a dozen).

Some will put me on their waiting list (average 2 years)
Some will only put regular customers on their waiting lists
Some deny all knowledge of waiting lists put politely decline to order a watch for me or let me know when they might be getting one in

Naively thought I'd just be able to walk into a shop and hand over my £8k but no one wants it. You've got to laugh, really.

If you're London based look here http://www.watches.co.uk/

Got my watch from here, good service and plenty of stock to try on.. Oh and they have plenty of Daytona's on there..
  • I don't get it, excuse my ignorance.

I love watches, but I like a style and buy that style regardless of the make.

The daytona looks a nice style, but if somebody had a fake one that looked exaclty the same and cost £50 , I would buy that, as I said it is the style not name.

But, what makes a watch 8k?

    I don't do fake.

Incidentially I have a Longines Evidenza and love it.

Aha, didn't realise they had joined the LMVH gang. Mind you, it seems all-encompassing these days.

I'm going through T5 tomorrow so can ask in Mappin & Webb for you. I've used them before and they're very helpful.

What exactly do you want? Steel/black or steel/white (or something else)?

    That's kind of you!

I'm after the Daytona 116520 with white face, list price £7,950

    Any help etc......

As I said, I am about the look not cost. If I was a multi millionaire I would buy an expensive watch for the Look, alas I am not.

I am curious though, what is it that makes a watch cost 8k. I have seen some real ugly watches costing 12k with a leather strap?
  • The only watch for me is the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I have owned one for 39 years (21st birthday present) It is a classic mechanical watch and it is inscribed on the case with these words 'Flight Qualified by NASA for All Manned Space Missions - the First Watch Worn on the Moon' How cool is that !!
Still gives me a buzz every morning when I wind it up and put it on. I have worn it everyday for 39 years. It has been rebuilt by Omega several times, has never let me down and keeps excellent time
  • Beancounter where are you located? There are plenty of grey dealers in London who could help you out, especially around the Burlington Arcade.

On a slightly different note do people cycle in their watches? I wear a Submariner and usually take it off when I'm cycling just in case I should wipe out for whatever reason and scratch it to pieces.

There's a De Rosa on wiggle for £12k. The cost to build will be what, £1k max?

You can get brand new cars with far more technology, man hours and materials than that for almost half the price.

The De Rosa's price is completely unjustifiable given the cost to manufacture. However, people will still buy them.

It's the same as the watch. It's desirable, rare and people want it. It's a Veblen good and the price just makes it more desirable.

Sorry bc, they weren't much help. The chap I normally deal with wasn't in, and the guy I spoke to gave a pretty generic answer. Apparently they don't stock the steel models at their airport branches as supply is so erratic. White gold, rose gold, etc - no problem, but that doesn't help you. They did suggest speaking to their Bond Street store, which is the Mappin & Webb Rolex main branch, but he didn't expect them to hold stock even if they can get one.

As mentioned above, there is a chap in Burlington Arcade who might be useful, but I didn't see any Daytonas last time I was there. He had a lovely Deep Sea for your sort of money though  There is also a vintage Rolex store there, and although they don't tend to stock Daytonas, they have some lovely old watches.

Otherwise it's the usual suspects - Watches of Switzerland, Watchfinder, etc. Harrods might be worth a try too.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
