Maybe, although Nokia are very late into the smartphone game. I can remember my first phone being a Nokia 3210.

Not as late as you'd think. Remember Smartphones as we now know them have only been about for 5 years. Nokia has been producing Symbian and Meego phones since then too, but obviously not very successfully. My first phone was also a Nokia, the beast that was the 3310.

This is what can be done with root access though ;)

Yeah i rooted and flashed a custom (but pretty much stock rom) so I could get updates faster, but i didn't think it was worth it going for a ROM with more features as Nova Launcher has me covered for most of the things I want to change.

The circle battery in the notification bar is one thing I thought about flashing as an add-on though.

I'm running XENONHD at the moment. It looks pretty awesome with Jelly Bean and Yellow HOLO theme

This is what it's like now

I would love to use a custom ROM but I feel I'd end up bricking my phone.

The other reason why I'd prefer a Note 2 over S3 is that Jelly Bean comes stock, I know the S3 will get an update but it will first go to the network who will then have to approve it before it's released. So it could be a while before you finally get the update.

Not if you have a sim free phone ;) I always buy sim-free these days. That way you get updates straight from Samsung and at least a month or two before carrier branded handsets do. Also remember than in the next two or three months Google will release the new Nexus phone which will come with the latest build (Maybe JB maybe KLP) and you'll get updates straight from google!

Whatever you decide, do your sums. A phone bought sim free plus say a ten quid pcm giffgaff package can work out cheaper than a similar 24 month contract with 'free' phone and comparable allowances.

I have no idea what all this root over clocking jelly yellow sh*t is, and whilst I like the apps, am probably not going to need to know what they are. No disrespect to those who have put pics of their screens, but they just look like phone screens.

I guess I'll get one of them there iPhones for people who are new to smart phones

Get a Windows Phone. Simpler than Android but much nicer than iOS. Look at the Lumia 800 it's cheap, fast, light and small.

exactly - they mess around with it because they can. Then wonder why it doesn't work properly next week.

a bit like my bike
  • Just poke my nose in here and declare that giffgaff are a great outfit and a tenner a month will satisfy all but the most greedy of downloaders. My needs in actual fact, are covered by a fiver per month 'goody bag', and still oodles of minutes and data allowance left over at the end of each month. Look em' up.

I'll also provoke a wee bit of hysteria here by declaring that I bought an iPhone 4s from the Apple store sim free, and have since compared it with other 'phones here and there that my chums have, and can only say that - ignoring the OS here - the iPhone's physicality keeps the faith with the Macbook Pro I have in that it actually possesses that intangible feel of quality that the others in my experience do not have. A bit like comparing a Roller with a Ford Focus for example: they both do the same job quite well, but you might pay the premium for something that doesn't look and feel slightly plasticky, tacky and a carrier of infectious disease.

    I'd agree with this.

The OP obviously wants something that just works, and the iPhone just does.

MattC59 - Whilst you might think you won't use apps, you might be surprised once you have the option. I spent a while figuring out what I'd need, but they can be really useful. Maps, things like Around Me, Hailo, currency converters, What's App, Sky+ and Sky Go, not to mention loads of games and all the fitness apps. It's a cliche, but the phrase "I've got an app for that" can be true.

Also, I'm happy to be locked into the Apple world because I don't want to break into roots and all that nonsense, and I can also sync my phone seamlessly with all the other things in my house (iPad, computer, iPod, etc). The ability to dock my phone and charge/play music on the various docking stations around my house is also nice, but this may not be any use to you.

Also (and this may only be a small plus) any company who makes docking stations, covers, sleeves, screen protectors etc. make them first for iPhone then for others, so you have a wide range of accessories available.

I do like apple as the iPhone just works. Plain and simple

However my laptop is a Samsung, have a Samsung tv so Samsung phone makes sense. Plus with some deals I could get a Samsung galaxy tab free.

The one thing I love about the new lumia is the wireless charging.

So, the next question is..... What's GiffGaff ?

I've had a look at their site, and it appears to be another viable offering for a sim, but what network do they use ? Their own ? A combination of networks ? What's the coverage like ?

Also, is the 'goody bag' thing essentially a 'pay as you go' system ?

    Cheers

Was going to ask this question myself
  • Giff Gaff runs on the O2 network (who actually own Giff Gaff)

Goody bag are a non-contract based system that you can pay monthly on direct debit, or chop and change goody bags as you require them monthly by paying through there website.

You have to provide your own mobile (either unlocked or O2 locked) and they are good value for calls, and the £10 bag gives you 250 mins per month, free texts and free internet access.

Best way to get a SIM card is find a friend who is on Giff Gaff already. They can recommend you and you will both get £5 credit free. PM me if you need a SIM card.

    Hi Matt,

Here's my view, I was heavily into the computer business for more than 15 years and have had a mobile since 1989, so I feel well versed to make an opinion.

Initial mobiles were the dreaded bricks from NEC etc. heavy, poor reception, big, but worked OK, then Nokia became the brand leader with Motorola and Sony Ericsson joining in.

iTunes came onto the scene for an "alternative way" to Microsoft to store your music files etc. I hated it when it first came out as it was slow and clumsy and ignored it for many years.

All I wanted for many years was a phone with text and photo abilities, wasn't worried about the internet as I don't live on my phone!

In between time I bought for my kids a 1st Gen iTouch for their Chrissy present about 4 years ago, they loved it and when I had a play, I thought it was brill, so bought one myself as it allowed me to manage my music via iTunes and use wi-fi when I was away to check my email and view the web, it became indispensable when I went fishing or was travelling.

I still used a "normal phone" and then experimented with a Sony Satio, which was crap, in between time my son bought an iPhone 4 and I had a play and thought this is brilliant, I went and bought one and even now a year later I think it is the best thing since sliced bread, I was so impressed that I also bought an iPad so that I could sit in the living room with my family and brows the web etc.

My daughter and future son-in-law were on Nokia and HTC, they experienced regular crashes and incompatibility. Eventually they have seen the light after seeing my son and I use our iPhone 4's and are slowly changing over at contract renewal time.

For me I need a phone to communicate and need to produce quotes and access the internet whilst out of the office, the iPhone and the iPad full fill that requirement more than I can imagine, just keep your phone up to date, down download loads of stupid applets, treat it like a tool rather than a toy and I'm sure you will find it perfect for what you want to do.

Still think that iTunes is slow and infuriatingly the latest update insists on switching my colour resolution every time it is launched, but it does an admirable job at backing up my phone and managing my files.

Others may have different experiences than me so have a listen to all the views and have an experiment in the shops.

iphone 5 is coming out in a few weeks just wait for that. imo its the best. just check when apple has the big conference centres booked, thats where they unveil it.

    do the right thing :)

I've had an iPhone (3g, 3gs, now 4) and have come to the conclusion that Apple have been losing the edge, if they even had it, for years now. Android is so much better. When upgrade time comes I'm am definately getting shot of the iphone. It really annoys me how they are so slow to keep up with the competition in terms of software, iOS 6 looks only worthy of a x.1 upgrade, the 'features' are little things that should have been in place for a long time. It is far too locked down and people are starting to see this. Plus, the next iphone, as far as leaks and rumors go, looks set to be a huge dissapointment. It looks far too similar to the 4/4s and only has a taller screen which makes it look very in-proportionate; obviously a cheap-skate way of retaining the, now very stale, operating system that remains as boring as ever. Seriously though, why am I always being told the wrong weather report? Why not have a live icon? Same with the clock.

In summary, from an iPhone user, go android. I will be soon.

Well Apple are having a press conference/launch on Wednesday were rumours say the iPhone 5 will be shown. But my choice is between iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Although if I got an Samsung Galaxy S3 I could also get a Galaxy Note Tab 7.0 free which is very tempting.

So why will it be iPhone 6?

It could be called the new iPhone just like they did with the iPad.

No one knows exactly what it will be called yet as it hasn't been released yet, been seeing as the current iPhone is the 4S it makes sense to call it the iPhone 5.

This one will technically be the 6th iPhone, but i'm pretty sure it'll either be iPhone 5 or the New iPhone like they did with the iPad.

47 never had a mobile, never will.

I just can't abide the fact that these days you cannot even sit on a quiet beach without someone talking on the bloody things...

I was in sainsbury's the other day and this woman says into her phone "what something or other shall I get love?", conversation ended with "and what aisle are you in?"!!!

    End of rant.
