What speed have you managed?

I've ony, ever managed to get 42mph on a descent but not for lack of trying or a lack of decent hills. Maybe I'm not aero enough or something?!
After doing Etape Cymru on Sunday though I've realised that the speed itself isnt as crucial as the road you're on. Yesterday with traffic free roads, junctions coned off etc I enjoyed the downhills massively as I knew there was a MUCH lower chance of anything unexpected or dangerous happening. So, although I only got 40mph on the day the adrenalin was much much higher!0 -

I can get 35 just from coasting down a shortish 9% - pedal too and I'm up to 42 - but running out of gears - 120 cadence ! Managed 48 by drafting a cement lorry (not too close!) down the same hill - cadence was 150!0 -
So .. someone asked and I want to know .. who's come off their bike on a descent doing 40+ ?
Is no one answering because they all died or got paralysed?!All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

I came off at about 30-35mph, not quite 40 but this felt quick enough to know I don't want to come off at 40+! Never had the chance to glance fully, but a couple of seconds before impact I saw 35 on the Garmin.
Coming down Crooked Lane .for anyone who knows Portsdown Hill just outside Portsmouth, it's very steep but pretty short and has some blind corners.
I caught up with a car way too fast that I didn't even realise was around the corners, was doing about 40+ at this point, panicked, hit the breaks, all locked up, it was still either hit the back of the car pretty much of at least try and off road, not that there was any room on the verge, so hit that, flying, bike goes up in the air, I was spinning around, end up halfway through a bush thinking WTF?
I was surprisingly unscathed, although my whole body just ached in all sorts of places for over a week after, just pride that took a complete mauling that day and is still yet to recover0 -
I has my 1st high speed off today, my Garmin had clocked 64 kmph, but i guess after a bit of braking by the time my skin hit the floor prob more like 50-55kmph, the result was severe gravel rash on my left arm and arse cheek as well as a bruised ego! Damn that white van!!2010 Mondraker Factor RR

Not bad for a fat bloke on a Boardman Team CX. Took me four laps to MTFU to this speed. The lack of traffic, excellent road surface and disc brakes were somewhat reassuring, not sure I would attempt this on normal roads.
Best regards

I can well believe it - I did 44.3 in july down there and that was in 50/19. Thankfully the road was clear so I could stay close to the white line by the golf club - anything over 30 though and i'm reaching the breaks - much prefer going uphill.
That'll be Shaley Brow hill near me. Been down it on a mountain bike. Not going down it on my road bike until I get a helmet. I have yet to climb it on my roadbike without stopping (I am 120kg and my lowest gear is 39/26).0
