What speed have you managed?

I recently managed 42mph down a hill on a mountain bike with road tyres on.
It was an empty road so I just decided to go for it.
I used the Endomondo app but i'm not sure how accurate it is.
Just interested to see what others have had the nerve to do.

Cheers

30.9mph so far, though it wasn't that steep a hill and it's not as easy getting hunched down over flat bars... and the backpack probably didn't help me cut through the air either... errrrrrr

This subject comes up repeatedly and always goes the same way. The best thing to do is get a box of popcorn, dim the lights, sit back and watch it all unfold.......

88mph, it was ace, I ended up back at the top of the hill before I'd started !

  • About 45mph.

North Herts is very flat; there are a couple of short steep inclines that I practice on. Both of my bikes are 5 speeds, so I daresay with an 11 or 12 cog rather than a 14 I might be able to go negligibly quicker on the same hills.
  • Once clocked 52mph on an mtb, but not sure of the accuracy of the speedo so would love to hit the same hill again with a GPS.

As it happens though, in a few months of road biking I got my highest speed today, at 47.4mph. Which I was mega chuft about. Just got to hit the big 50 next. That's what it came up as on my Garmin anyway. But when I got home Strava is showing it as 44.5mph. Thing is, Strava seems to knock it down every time....anyone else experience this, and know why? I'd love to know the most accurate way to record it.

53mph on grass on an Mtb. For those who know the southdowns way it's the decent in to QE park. Haven't managed more than about 45mph on the road bike though, which is odd, because it should be faster. But I just don't feel safe with rim brakes and 23c tyres at that speed.

Road bike - 48mph down a shortish steep hill - drafting a cement mixer lorry. I spun out at 150rpm - could've taken it faster with a smaller gear and a faster Lorry!
I normally "only" do around 40 on that hill.

The scepticism on this subject by regulars of this forum comes from this thread How Fast have youbeen on your bike ?

It started off with a video and a claim of 77mph. To prove it he posted a photo of his bike computer showing max speed - unfortunately it also showed a current speed of 2.8mph whilst sitting on his dinning room table and the bike in the video didn't have a computer on it at all. People then started examining the video and calculated about 44mph max.

Not something I am overly fussed about. Generally keep myself to about 30mph going downhill. Above that I start to get nervous

Butser hill, down to the A3? That's interesting... must try it next time I'm there.

53mph descending from Fermes into Playa Blanca, Lanzarote with a tailwind. It's very easy to go even faster on that and other Lanzarote descents if you're heading south or thereabouts, wind is almost always from the north and the roads are in very good condition.

that's a great road to zoom down, although i had a scary crosswind once, caused just enough of of a wobble to get the heart pounding

i did a over 87kph coming down through timanfaya towards yaiza, think i could've gone faster but i had a video camera strapped to the headtube and was taking extra care to avoid making it the record of my demise in glorious hd

    going back in november :-)

Was going to ask the same, it's a great descent, but you need the gate open half way down and look out for the step !
Didn't check the speed, but I've regularly managed to spin out my hard tail down there, back in the mid '90s.

Ok, I'll join in.... 48mph down Streatly Hill, or so the Garmin said. F*cking stupid to be honest, considering the road, but great fun

  • The Garmin clocked me at 52mph on the final decent into Brighton on the L2B ride. But it's also clocked my top speed at 114mph out on my usual training ride, although I'm not entirely convinced this was accurate ;-)

My cheap computer gets confused when I go past 24.9, however I was going down my local steep hill once and a car was struggling to overtake me...

  • My highest so far is about 36mph coming down off a hill in the Lincolnshire Wolds. I could probably have gone much much quicker than this coming down the A859 at the Clisham range on the Isle of Harris but there were loads of sheep either side of the road and I hung on to the brakes just in case...

192mph when I tried using my phone GPS to clock speed. I was waiting at traffic lights at the time.

Not sure what its called but you come from the West on the SDW and its a pretty steep grassy decent. Just spin up as fast as you can and tuck in. As long as you are on XC tyres you'll hit 50mph no problem. Its a stupid thing to do mind ;)
