Trying to make a solo break in 4th cat...

How old are you - LVRCs seem to break up more than 3/4 BC races - similar standard of rider but more people seem to be riding to win rather than riding not to lose.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -
I fancy trying a few crits next year, actually got my racing license back in june but a bad crash on the local crit track caused the track owner to cancel the remaining events just as i applied for the license lol.
My only chance is the breakaway anyway as my sprint is poor doubt I can get over 800 watts for a sprint10 mile TT pb - 20:56 R10/17
25 - 53:07 R25/7

I was 4th at that most sprint friendly of circuits Hillingdon without breaking 800watts in the sprint. It been made a very tough race by me amoung others (I'd hit well over 1000 watts for 10 seconds at various points in the race but was too dead by the finish) but it had hurt everyone else more than me as as I said above, when you're aerobically fit you recover better than the average 4th cat even if they've not been dropped.

I have contemplated going solo after about 2/3rds of the race (hoping a few others will come accross).
With a 5.3 w/kg 5 min and 4 w/kg FTP, do you think its possible to stay away? My sprint is terrible. I can easily move up to the top 5 riders on the bell lap, but often get swamped on the final sprint. I never seem to follow a wheel....
I'd say you're best bet it is to do some handicap races if you can find them. Even without the frantic chaisng down of breaks that happens in the 4ths, it's hard to beat the pack if you need to sustain over 25mph for the break riding solo, which an FTP of 4w/kg is borderline. Get the right day in a handicap race and the extra minutes you get on the E/1/2/3's may be enough for a strongish 4th cat to stay away and you'll get BC points more easily. Check the Surrely League handicap race results and the 4ths often stay away. There's generally more co-operation too, at least up to the point you get hoovered up.0
